HSC Posted October 12, 2004 at 02:29 AM Report Posted October 12, 2004 at 02:29 AM I would like to confirm that 寓教于乐 means "to learn in an entertaining way" and that the pinyin is yùjiào yúlè (are the tones correct?). What would be a natural translation for this? By natural, I mean, a way that it would be said by an English speaker, given the same context, to naturally give the same meaning. Ex: 儿童学英语寓教于乐 A fun way for children to learn English ?? Quote

hifrank001 Posted October 23, 2004 at 05:34 PM Report Posted October 23, 2004 at 05:34 PM I'm an English-learner. Ex1: 孩子们通过做游戏学习英语,寓教于乐。 Children learn English by playing game, (which is a a fun way of education. Here, this idiom is used as a remark, which is the most common way also. Ex2: 我们要用一种寓教于乐的方式来激发同学们的兴趣 We should adopt an entertaining way to raise students' interest. It is a adjactive in the second example Quote
liger Posted October 24, 2004 at 04:33 AM Report Posted October 24, 2004 at 04:33 AM You understanding is exactly correct. However, the sentense you make: 儿童学英语寓教于乐 is not a proper use. In my opinion, 寓教于乐 is kind of teaching approaches instead of learning methods. Therefore, In china, 寓教于乐 is always a teachers' or educators' sentence. ha, I'm not a native English, I hope I express what I mean Quote
bokane Posted October 24, 2004 at 06:44 PM Report Posted October 24, 2004 at 06:44 PM I'd say you could safely translate it as "edu-tainment" in contexts where it's being used as a noun. Quote
