wiz_oz Posted October 14, 2004 at 11:58 PM Report Posted October 14, 2004 at 11:58 PM Can those forums members living in China comment on the extent of gambling there? While there no official lotteries or casinos (I might be wrong), I am pretty sure that some forms of it must exist? Betting on football games, both domestic and foreign? I have seen a lot of mainland chinese tourist frequenting casino overseas. And some of them do put on big bets..... Quote
Tsunku Posted October 15, 2004 at 07:56 AM Report Posted October 15, 2004 at 07:56 AM Dude, ma-jiang. It is all over the place, and people lose/win tons of money on it every day. Is it illegal to gamble?? Sure! But no one really seems to care much about that. There are ma-jiang parlours with nothing but tables full of people playing for money -- anywhere from 5-100RMB per game. If the police come around there is no mention of money, it is all for fun. They use cards or betting chips in place of money to "fool" the cops, although, of course, no one is really fooled at all. They just look the other way most of the time. The guy I'm dating now is a total addict. I hate ma-jiang. It is so evil. He claims it isn't the money that has him hooked, it's the feel of the tiles between his fingers. Anyhow, all I know is that he loses a ton and spends hours and hours each day on this bullsh*t. The game doesn't even involve that much skill, it's mostly just luck anyhow, and no one really seems to win, it's like some kind of money black hole. People here call going to play ma-jiang "shang ban," going to work. Stupid soul-stealing ma-jiang, it must be the only "job" where you pei qian rather than zhuan. Quote
badboy Posted October 15, 2004 at 12:09 PM Report Posted October 15, 2004 at 12:09 PM He claims it isn't the money that has him hooked, it's the feel of the tiles between his fingers. If that's really the case, he could just sit at home by himself and pick up the tiles whenever he gets the urge. It's the gambling that has him hooked, no question. I recently started playing Texas Hold 'em online. But I only play in the free games, for fun, at ultimatebet.com . And I love watching the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour on TV, fascinating game. Quote

bhchao Posted October 15, 2004 at 04:48 PM Report Posted October 15, 2004 at 04:48 PM Stupid soul-stealing ma-jiang, it must be the only "job" where you pei qian rather than zhuan I know how you feel. People say a man's addictive gambling is worse than another man's constant womanizing. Quote
liuzhou Posted October 16, 2004 at 12:01 AM Report Posted October 16, 2004 at 12:01 AM While there no official lotteries In fact, there are many official lotteries. (A few unofficial ones too!) See http://www.lottery.gov.cn/ Quote
Green Pea Posted October 16, 2004 at 02:25 AM Report Posted October 16, 2004 at 02:25 AM You can gamble and not be an addict. You can also gamble and not take significant risk. So, as badboy mentions, there are fascinating games obscured by a gambling culture. In fact, Texas Hold 'Em should be learned by all as a way to improve your decision making. Quote
