New Members TheBarrique Posted October 18, 2010 at 06:06 AM New Members Report Share Posted October 18, 2010 at 06:06 AM Hi, I was wondering if Mandarin domain names (released recently) are presently common in China. Will they be? I've seen that there will be both traditional and simplified domain names. Will there be a latin equivalent? I've searched all the web but couldn't find a complete documentation on this. Thanks
valikor Posted October 19, 2010 at 01:40 PM Report Share Posted October 19, 2010 at 01:40 PM I live in Beijing and have never seen a single website with a domain name that contained chinese characters (or Chinese anywhere in the address). (At least on advertisements, in stores, etc.) Though I would also be interested to know if it's possible, since I am actually about to register a domain name myself... I assume they don't exist. aristotle1990 Posted October 19, 2010 at 02:10 PM Report Share Posted October 19, 2010 at 02:10 PM No, it is not currently possible for individuals to register a name using Chinese characters. However, ICANN (the organization that controls domain name standards) is beginning to introduce non-Latin character domain names (see here), and apparently it is actually possible to get a Chinese domain name
