anonymoose Posted October 23, 2010 at 09:27 AM Report Posted October 23, 2010 at 09:27 AM Actually I agree with you about the texting. If I really need to send a message while I'm talking with someone, I will excuse myself first. As for people behaving disruptively in class, well, I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but I think a lot of people who come to China to "study" only do so as an excuse for a leisurely life, probably behaved the same way at school in their own countries, and as a result have little prospect for anything constructive at home, which is why they came in the first place. This is also the gang that go out en masse for a smoke during break, and come back five minutes late disrupting the class again. Fortunately the higher the level of the class, the fewer of these there are. 1 Quote
Brandon263 Posted October 23, 2010 at 10:06 AM Author Report Posted October 23, 2010 at 10:06 AM it seems Europe/the West values attention paid over attendance, while China values attendance over attention paid. Yeah. My professors in the States would never tolerate anyone texting or otherwise using their phone in class. But maybe this was because I attended a SLAC, other people might have different experiences. My Chinese lecturers, on the other hand, will shout at you because you 迟到了一分钟, but you can pretty much do whatever you want in class. I think a lot of people who come to China to "study" only do so as an excuse for a leisurely life (Gasps in fake horror) ;) Quote

crisgee Posted November 11, 2010 at 01:24 PM Report Posted November 11, 2010 at 01:24 PM I had an American classmate who thought it was hilarious to fart loudly in class. And we had told him to stop it but he would still continue. He did at least once a week, and worse he did it during exams. Strangely our teachers never once told him off. The most they did was just frown at him. I guess maybe because old people in China fart loudly like it's no thang. But seeeeriously. And this same guy also thought he was too good for one subject that he actually studies the next level's textbook in class. He asked the teacher's permission to just ignore him during the period and our teacher agreed. Though we couldn't really ignore him with all the farting. 1 Quote
Brian US Posted November 12, 2010 at 01:39 PM Report Posted November 12, 2010 at 01:39 PM I had an American classmate who thought it was hilarious to fart loudly in class. I'll admit that I can be cocky and arrogant. Yet, I think this stems from my "little man syndrome" than from being an American. The classmate farting takes it to a new low. Quote
