Clarie Posted October 20, 2010 at 12:17 PM Report Posted October 20, 2010 at 12:17 PM What do you think about these two names? Do they sound nice? Please tell me! Quote
Yang Rui Posted October 20, 2010 at 04:32 PM Report Posted October 20, 2010 at 04:32 PM The second two characters in Du Shiye sound the same as the verb to lose one's job, or be unemployed, so is not very auspicious. Shixue sounds like "blood loss". It's also a bit of a mouthful, with the 'x' following the 'sh' and the name ending in a third tone. A Chinese friend told me that it sounds best if a name ends in a first or second tone character, but that's just his opinion I suppose. Is the name based on the pronunciation of your real name? If you're comfortable with it, you could post your given name (for the "shiye/shixue" part) and native speakers might be able to suggest some nice sounding names. Quote
Hofmann Posted October 21, 2010 at 08:56 AM Report Posted October 21, 2010 at 08:56 AM It wouldn't even come to my mind that 詩雪 sounds like 失血 and 詩燁 sound like 失業. Rather, with a surname like 杜 and a name 詩雪, one might be reminded of the poem 對雪, which is about how much it sucks that An Lushan has occupied Chang'an. I'm not into the auspicious/ominous stuff, but it just reminds me of unhappy things. If your surname wasn't 杜, maybe you could get away with it. The usage of 燁 is all pretty nice. Therefore, I like 詩燁. Quote
Clarie Posted October 21, 2010 at 12:36 PM Author Report Posted October 21, 2010 at 12:36 PM Whoa! That bad? lol Well, then, can anyone suggest a nice name for two girls with the last name 杜? Seems like the 诗 is out of the question! We just want names with the kind of serene and soft feelings, like snow or clouds. Thanks in advance! Quote
