Alveranter Posted October 17, 2004 at 09:46 PM Report Posted October 17, 2004 at 09:46 PM Everything is 什么都. If you make it a negation as in: 你什么都明白!it means nothing, right? But if you want to say: "not everything" or "not everyone", what then? My book just gives me two examples and I just don't get the meaning of them: 1. 我们不是什么也没有。 The sentence is translated (roughly): "It is not so, that we don't have anything." (in actual speech: We have something???) But I don't get this, dosn't it say like: "It is not so that we don't have nothing", which would mean that they actually possessed something? 2. 不是哪个人都喜欢他 Translated: "It's not everybody that likes him." The only thing I don't grasp here is the use of 哪个人 Shouldn't that mean "those people". The sentence structure isn't always explained that thoroughly in the book.. I could use some help.. Quote
skylee Posted October 17, 2004 at 11:00 PM Report Posted October 17, 2004 at 11:00 PM "not everything" = 不是甚麼都(也)/不是所有東西都(也) 你甚麼都明白 = You understand everything 你甚麼都不明白 = You don't understand anything / You understand nothing 你不是甚麼都明白 = You don't understand everything (there is something that you don't understand) 你不是甚麼都不明白 = It is not that you don't understand anything (you do understand something) "not everyone" = 不是每個人都(也)/不是所有人都(也)/不是誰都(也) "those people" = 那些人 Quote
apet Posted October 19, 2004 at 08:00 AM Report Posted October 19, 2004 at 08:00 AM “哪个人” here means everyone, anyone 不是哪个人都喜欢他 Not everyone likes him. 你不是甚麼都明白 = You don't understand everything (there is something that you don't understand) 你不是甚麼都不明白 = It is not that you don't understand anything (you do understand something) the two sentences seem alike, but what they emphasize on are different. 你不是甚麼都明白 You know many things, but still there are something you don't know. 你不是甚麼都不明白 There are something you don't know, but you already know many things. Hope my help works. Quote
