"shi" in pinyin is usually pronounced like the sound "sh" prounced in english, the difference is like that when you pronounce "shi", pinyin, you throat should vibrate. the same thing, you shouldnot simply pronouced "si", pinyin, like how you pronounce "see" in english, it also should like "ssssssssss" and you should also feel your throat vibrating while you are pronoucing.
