Chinese DSL / broadband

Hi,

My parents live in ZhangZhou, Fujian province. I know they have some type of internet access, where a small modem is connected to their phone line, and their computer connects to this modem. It resembles DSL service in the US, except that when my parents want internet access, they have to use a special program on the PC to "log-on" to the internet. After the log-on process, the computer connected to the modem has internet access. They can also log-off by clicking on the special program.

Because of this log-on procedure, I don't think the DSL modem simply has DHCP and assigns IP address to whatever is connected to the ethernet port...I could be wrong. Does anyone know if this type of DSL service can be "fooled" by using the PPPOE feature on most wireless routers? If so, then I could make it easier for them by setting the password and user ID in the PPPOE section of the router, and give them wireless LAN in their apartment. They can actually make use of the laptop that they have. I can also get them a wireless photo frame...

But all of that depends on their internet working like a PPPOE connection. They don't know technology enough to be able to tell me, so I was hoping maybe someone here is familiar with the typical internet ISP setup.

Thanks very much.

John

I've only ever used student dorm internet in China, so I can't speak from experience here.

Any DSL I've used back home was PPPOE, though. It had a similar piece of software, if the computer was connected directly to the modem, but I've never had a problem using a router's PPPOE settings instead. Your best bet is probably to see if a friend has a router you can borrow to test.

I had an ADSL internet connection in china that used some specific login program. It was easy to work out the connection details though and set up a connection through windows's ADSL dialer thing. Other people used wireless routers in the same way, so I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do what you want without any problems.

The only thing to be careful of is that they are not charged by time logged on. If so you might want to think about how you set up the router.
