bhchao Posted October 28, 2010 at 02:36 AM Report Posted October 28, 2010 at 02:36 AM Nice read about the Korean island tradition of women diving under the sea to make a living: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-korea-women-divers-20101027,0,1663729.story The women dive with no scuba gear or oxygen tanks. My grandma told me that women divers at Jeju island used to bring their daughters under the sea at an early age to catch seaweed. They didn't wear wetsuits then. Quote
skylee Posted October 28, 2010 at 02:48 AM Report Posted October 28, 2010 at 02:48 AM Many years ago I joined a local tour at Jeju Island and met some diving women. IIRC they were not young and they wore some sort of simple diving suit (like that in the picture of the article). There were mostly American Koreans in my tour group and they insisted on buying seafood and eating it there. I was not interested but they explained that they would like to let the women make some money. Quote
jbradfor Posted October 28, 2010 at 03:21 AM Report Posted October 28, 2010 at 03:21 AM As with skylee, I learned about them on Jeju Island. Interesting that the article discusses Mara Island only. On Jeju Island there is also a Museum dedicated to them (which we visited). Quote
