mr.stinky Posted November 1, 2010 at 01:09 PM Report Posted November 1, 2010 at 01:09 PM no, this is not cosmetic surgery. i don't need it. according to my female students, i'm so handsome, and the boys all say i'm too lovely. nose jobs are common, but it seems mostly for cosmetic reasons. would be nice to find an experienced doctor who knows what a western nose should look like. mine will be to clear up some breathing problems. will need a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum, with the added complication of a turbinoplasty. any recommendations withing our china? travel is not a problem. not much choice in yunnan, and the one international hospital in kunming has gotten a bad reputation. i'm thinking maybe guangzhou or wuhan. anyone experienced the loving care at clifford hospital in guangzhou and survived? or maybe 3rd affilitated of guangzhou med uni? how about tongyi/union hospital in wuhan? otherwise a trip to bangkok during spring break. abcdefg Posted November 1, 2010 at 02:55 PM Report Posted November 1, 2010 at 02:55 PM travel is not a problem. not much choice in yunnan, and the one international hospital in kunming has gotten a bad reputation. Sounds as though Yunnan may be your starting point. I agree that Richland Hospital in Kunming is a very bad idea. A Chinese friend got his nose badly broken in a basketball game (head butt) this spring and had to have a septoplasty to straighten it out afterwards. He went to Yan'An Hospital and was fairly pleased, though not ecstatic. It's a general hospital, not a "specialist hospital." 昆明市延安医院 -- It's on Renmin Donglu 人民东路between Baita Lu 白塔路 and East Ring Road 二环东路, not far from Wal-Mart 沃尔马 and on the same side of the street. Here is the Google map page reference: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=kunming&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl Here is the hospital website: http://www.kmyayy.cn/ If you are relatively close by, you could go check it out well in advance. No English spoken. If you don't like what you see, Bumrungrad in Bangkok would be a good fallback plan. Quote

xuechengfeng Posted November 1, 2010 at 07:11 PM Report Posted November 1, 2010 at 07:11 PM I had deviated septum surgery a few years ago in America. Let me be clear: you're going to be in some serious pain for a week or two. I don't think flying is recommended soon after the surgery and I would imagine this is one recommendation to take seriously. Quote
mr.stinky Posted November 2, 2010 at 02:17 PM Author Report Posted November 2, 2010 at 02:17 PM pain? pain is my friend. last hospital visit was open-heart surgery in india. after two weeks flew back to china, changed planes twice, carried my own (very light) luggage. rough landings were a bitch! did i say pain was my friend? i meant industrial-strength painkillers. Jane_PA Posted November 2, 2010 at 05:36 PM Report Posted November 2, 2010 at 05:36 PM I will always think that Beijing has the best hospital and doctors in China. In China, most doctors and good doctors work for state owned hospitals. So, find a good hospital first. http://www.haodf.com/ This is an open online forum to comment doctors in China, which may provide some information. Quote
mr.stinky Posted December 28, 2010 at 04:50 PM Author Report Posted December 28, 2010 at 04:50 PM and now for an update. there be good news. the famous 北京同仁医院 has opened a branch right here in kunming on 广福路。 has been open for five months now, head of the ENT department spent the last few years at the beijing hospital, seems to nose his noses. i'll be going in next week for the $67 CT-scan and evaluation. looks like i'll need an ethmoidectomy (ectomatomy of the ethmoid?) in addition to the septoplasty and turbinoplasty. or did he make up that last one to pad the bill? a 30-minute taxi ride would sure beat flying to bangkok. i'll post the results if i survive. Ethmoidectomy exists, though I'll agree the term sounds strange. http://www.sinusinfocenter.com/sinus_faq_11.html Quote
mr.stinky Posted January 8, 2011 at 11:17 AM Author Report Posted January 8, 2011 at 11:17 AM here's your update....i survived. not much pain at all, really. just took some ibuprofen for a couple nights. worst part was tugging the splints and wadding out. otherwise bearable. I decided to have the operation last week, stayed in hospital for four nights. Incredibly clean, modern, well-equipped, and efficient. The operation went smoothly, and I'm now home recuperating. And for anyone wondering about the cost - surgery, medications, consultation, follow-up and four nights in hospital was 6500 RMB. that's about the cost of one night in a us hospital. 1 Quote
gato Posted January 8, 2011 at 11:25 AM Report Posted January 8, 2011 at 11:25 AM That's cheap. 6500 RMB is probably not enough for one night in a US hospital. Quote

mr.stinky Posted January 11, 2011 at 12:42 PM Author Report Posted January 11, 2011 at 12:42 PM another update for all you rhinoplasty aficionados... went in for a follow up this afternoon, doc pulled out the final plastic stent thingy.....and i can breathe thru all nostrils. at the same time. shazaaam!!! my personal shopper nurse then walked me to the cashier to finalize the bill... ...only to find i paid too much. here's 28 rmb back. oh, and here's the fifty for the room deposit (they counted the pillows). there was no attempt made to pad the bill for the fur'ner, and no push to get me into the vip ward. they're also learning customer service. over the past month i've had four calls from the hospital asking if i was satisfied with the medical treatment, the cleanliness of the hospital, and the nurses nursing skills. they do not provide towels in the bathroom, nor the little hotel sized packs of soap & shampoo. and no toilet paper. (all available at the first floor minimart) i asked the ward director, he said chinese patients would not allow it...would try to refuse them for a couple kuai refund (as with restaurant napkin packets) for 昆明人, you can take public transport directly to the hospital. bus numbers 24, 120, 196, 165, 181, 141 (bus 24 starts at kunming train station) Quote
