Rent apartment on 6-month F-Visa (business)

Greetings,

I will arrive in Beijing on a 6-month double entry F-Visa (business) in December. I would like to stay in a hotel for the first few days while I find an apartment. Can I rent an apartment with this kind of Visa? Would I then need to register with the police and get a residence permit? Can I get a (one-year) residence permit with a F-Visa and would it supercede the 6-month Visa? Your help and advice would be most appreciated.

Unless things have changed, you can rent on any type of visa - I've rented on tourist visas before.

You will need to go to the police to register, but that is just an administrative procedure, you will not get a residence permit. To get the residence permit, you would need an X (studies) or Z (work) visa.
