kongli Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:39 AM Report Posted November 15, 2010 at 02:39 AM Hello, Upon some inquiry in the last couple of weeks, it seems that the requirements for keeping the CSC scholarship are conspicuously absent. I have a few friends at the school I am studying who don't attend 1 or 2 of their classes, but do not seem too worried about failing them and losing the scholarship. These friends, like myself, will all be doing Master's programs next year and see some of their language classes as not the best use of their time for studying. I am also of this persuasion, and would rather use the class time, for a couple of my classes, to study on my own/or attend other undergrad/grad courses in my subject. However, I am afraid if I a 'fail' a class or two I will be at risk for losing my scholarship. Does anyone have any experience with this? What exactly would cause someone to loose the scholarship? Thanks in advance for any replies, kongli Quote
Brian US Posted November 15, 2010 at 04:06 AM Report Posted November 15, 2010 at 04:06 AM I have never heard of anyone losing their scholarship, but I wouldn't want to be the first one to find out how. This entirely depends on your school, so I would ask your teachers or the school office what options you have. As the point of Chinese classes before your Masters is to get your Chinese level to an adequate level, they may only be concerned with your HSK score. I knew a student that did not reach the required HSK score, so he was forced to take another semester of Chinese. I do not know if he was scholarship, or if he was I don't know if he had to pay for that extra semester. My school even said I might not even need to take the HSK as long as I finish a year of Chinese. So goes the life of us foreigners in China. Quote
roddy Posted November 15, 2010 at 08:00 AM Report Posted November 15, 2010 at 08:00 AM I think if you check the CSC discussion archives you'll find Miss CSC herself extrapages got a second year of scholarship, despite a less than stellar attendance record. And I don't recall any scholarship students reporting issues. Bear in mind that the university is getting a set of tuition and accommodation fees paid - there's not much percentage for them in pointing out to Beijing that you aren't turning up. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted November 15, 2010 at 08:04 AM Report Posted November 15, 2010 at 08:04 AM I know of at least one CSC student who had her scholarship cancelled after the first year but that was for missing tonnes and tonnes of classes. Quote
kongli Posted November 16, 2010 at 04:03 AM Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 at 04:03 AM Thanks for all the replies, I guess that makes me feel a little more 'secure'. I have talked to administrators at the school who seem to say it is not a big deal, but no one is really sure about the exact requirements. Oh well, just keep studying and see what happens, haha. Brian US Posted November 16, 2010 at 04:36 AM Report Posted November 16, 2010 at 04:36 AM but no one is really sure about the exact requirements I seriously think we could get by with the 2012-CSC thread by JUST having this as the first post. Quote
crisgee Posted November 20, 2010 at 12:54 PM Report Posted November 20, 2010 at 12:54 PM There is only one requirement folks. One requirement to rule them all. "Do not addict in alcohol!" And don't drive unlicensed motorcyles I think as long as you don't commit any crime (serious or petty) and that you follow your school's rules, you're pretty much okay. Quote
Helios Posted November 20, 2010 at 01:54 PM Report Posted November 20, 2010 at 01:54 PM @crisgee Thank you so much for getting a photo of that PowerPoint slide. That "orientation" was everything it shouldn't have been and so much more! Quote
Brian US Posted November 20, 2010 at 06:23 PM Report Posted November 20, 2010 at 06:23 PM What orientation did you guys go through? That is possibly the greatest picture I have ever seen. Is she eating a human heart? I heard a few years ago when BLCU had an orientation it included a part that told the foreign guys to keep their hands off the girls on campus. Quote
crisgee Posted November 21, 2010 at 11:22 AM Report Posted November 21, 2010 at 11:22 AM This one was at the BNU Orientation on the China's laws etc. My friend from 北京邮电大学 told me they had the same powerpoint in their orientation! I guess it's standard procedure? Hahaha! It's kind of unfair since i like that brand of soju. Yeah, it was quite an interesting orientation. Quote
gato Posted November 21, 2010 at 12:42 PM Report Posted November 21, 2010 at 12:42 PM Is she eating a human heart? Yes, her roommate's heart. Be careful out there. Quote
