J.B. Frog Posted October 25, 2004 at 07:00 AM Report Posted October 25, 2004 at 07:00 AM Well it's banned in most European countries plus the US & Canada. I don't know about Mexico. In those places it is seen as cruel, and was stopped long ago. Now I guess only Spain & Mexico (I'm not sure about Mexico) allow it for being for so long a part of their tradition and even cultural identity. I think cock fighting may still be legal in some US states but I'm not sure. That and dog fighting may still both be legal in Mexico, or if they're not legal, it still goes on if the movie 'Amores Perros' is to be believed. Even boxing (two grown men punching each other) is seen as inhumane by many, especially since it does damage to the participants (eg Muhammed Ali's Parkinson's disease or whatever it is is thought to be due to boxing). But because it's done by adults of their own free will it's hard to outlaw it. What do most Chinese think of cricket fighting? 1 Quote
liuzhou Posted October 25, 2004 at 10:15 AM Report Posted October 25, 2004 at 10:15 AM Before we get too uppity about the Spanish, please remember or learn that China has its own bull-fighting tradition among certain minorities. Most Miao and Yi festivals include bull fighting. http://www.travelchinaguide.com/cityguides/guizhou/minority/ Quote

Ian_Lee Posted October 25, 2004 at 08:50 PM Report Posted October 25, 2004 at 08:50 PM Bullfighting is regularly held over the weekend in Mexico City. Other than visiting the pyramids, seeing bullfighting is another must do in Mexico City. For cock fighting, even in US it can still be found in some neighborhoods where Filipinos live. When you stroll around there early in the morning, you can hear rooster crowing in their backyards (I pity those non-Filipino neighbors). Cricket fighting seems to be less popular nowadays in China. But in terms of brutality, the former two are more awesome since you see blood. I never understand why Olympic classified Boxing as a sport event. Quote
39degN Posted October 26, 2004 at 03:06 PM Author Report Posted October 26, 2004 at 03:06 PM thank you, everybody! What do most Chinese think of cricket fighting? they think ppl addictive to it are 八旗子弟! Most Miao and Yi festivals include bull fighting. i dont think those fighting ends up by killing the bulls(or the matador). Quote
Jose Posted November 2, 2004 at 01:16 AM Report Posted November 2, 2004 at 01:16 AM Personally, I don't like bullfighting. I would support banning it, but I have to admit that there are still lots of people in Spain who enjoy it, and it is impossible to imagine a ban any time soon. The main difference between Spanish bullfighting and other forms of cruelty towards animals that have existed in all societies is that bullfighting has become a business and a way of life for many people. It has its own star system, with bullfighters (and their ex wives and lovers) becoming celebrities in the media. Also, a lot of people in Spain, especially in the South, see it as a part of their cultural identity and feel a good deal of animosity against those foreigners who dare to criticise it. As other posters have said, bullfighting is also popular in Mexico. Besides (mainly southern) Spain and Mexico, there is also a bullfighting tradition in Colombia (I think), and parts of southern France, and in Portugal. In Portugal, the rules are different and the bull is not killed (not in public anyway). Quote
