Beginner's Textbooks for Chinese Immigrating to the States

Hi all,

I have a relative who is immigrating to the US this year. For Christmas, I wanted to get her a beginner's textbook and some tools (flashcards, language software, etc.) for learning English.

I realize that I might be posting this in the wrong area, but I was hoping that some of the language whizzes here might be able to suggest some simple but effective English textbooks or tools for a Shanghainese person trying to learn English.

She is an older Chinese woman who currently has no understanding of English, so it has to be a textbook that starts from the beginning. Ideally, this resource should be interesting and teach her practical English she'll use in daily life in the States. I really want to find something that makes the process of picking up English easier, since at her age it may be harder than usual to learn a language.
