Proper word to use for Teacher

Recommended Posts

I found three words that seem to mean teacher. They are (in pinyin): lao shi, jiao shi, and dao shi. What is the difference between them or when is each used? Thanks in advance

I'm no expert, but this is what Zhongwen.com says..

導師 dao3shi1= adviser

老師 lao3shi1 = teacher

教師 jiao4shi1 = teacher

I'm assuming maybe lao3shi1 = more respectful because lao3 implies older, more distinguished?

Hope I can make it clear.

导师=advisor, or mentor.

As for the difference between 老师 and 教师, it is analogous to that of "professor" and "faculty" in English (though not exactly). 教师 is emphasized as a kind of profession, while 老师 is a very common title for teachers. Say, you can call somebody 赵老师, but 赵教师 is definitely wrong.

Yes, Name-jiaoshi would be wrong, but Name-Jiaoshou would be OK. Jiaoshou corresponds to our 'professor'.

教师 is a kind of profession,it is used in official documents or in the news reports

we can say 她是一位教师。

老师 is used in the spoken language

we also can say

we can't say 今天是老师/导师节 but 今天是老师/教师的节日 is right

we can call somebody 王老师/李老师,早晨好 or 老师,早晨好

导师 is a teather who teachs advanced knowledge In the university.

if you want to continue a Master degree or a doctor degree ,you can say

导师 is also a political term , for example 毛主席是我们伟大的导师

it is seldom used like this now.
