Glenn Posted December 23, 2010 at 01:59 AM Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 01:59 AM I want to check that I'm understanding this definition correctly. According to the 國語辭典, it means 喜歡做別人的老師。指人不謙虛,喜歡教導別人。 That means to like acting like other people's teacher, and it refers to someone who isn't humble, and likes to instruct others, right? So basically it's a know-it-all? Quote
semantic nuance Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:20 AM Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:20 AM Yes, I guess you can say that. I don't know if the phrase is necessarily to be related to 'not humble'. 好為人師 is someone who likes to impose his/her thinking on other people, like s/he is everyone's mentor. 1 Quote
Yang Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:26 AM Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:26 AM It's not really know-it-all, you can take it as not humble, or just someone really willing to teach the others what he knows, in a good way. In my opinion, not humble or just willing to teach, depends on the context. Quote
Glenn Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:27 AM Author Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:27 AM @Semantic Nuance OK, thanks. Would you say they also don't listen to other people's opinions, because they believe they know better than everyone else? @Yang Do you disagree with 指人不謙虛? I'm trying to make sure I understood that right. Quote
skylee Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:40 AM Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:40 AM I agree with Semantic Nuance. Quote

semantic nuance Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:45 AM Report Posted December 23, 2010 at 02:45 AM they believe they know better than everyone else? Perhaps unconsciously they are. A person who 好為人師 likes to instruct / preach / explicate what s/he thinks is right. Accepting other people's opinions or not, s/he will keep blah blah blahing. 3 Quote
