anonymoose Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:26 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:26 PM I got the following two sentences/phrases from this news article: 昔孟母,择邻处 书中自有黄金屋,书中自有颜如玉 What do they mean? Quote
skylee Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:40 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:40 PM 昔孟母,择邻处 - just search for story of 孟母三遷 书中自有黄金屋,书中自有颜如玉 - study hard and you will (get good results in exams, get a good job, rise socially and) eventually get what you desire (money, women, you name it). PS - I have removed the link. Read roddy's post below. Quote
anonymoose Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:44 PM Author Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:44 PM Thanks, skylee. That link doesn't work though, in the mainland at least. So 颜 here means women? Quote
skylee Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:51 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:51 PM 顏如玉 ~ jade like beauty PS - I have removed the story. See roddy's post below. Quote
roddy Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:52 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:52 PM Judging by the url and the fact that it's not accessible, it'll be a FLG issue. Shouldn't be hard to find the story elsewhere. Quote
anonymoose Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:59 PM Author Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 02:59 PM So what's wrong with the sentence 昔孟母,择邻处? Why did they need to take it out of the book? Quote
skylee Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:01 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:01 PM ah didn't realise that. right it shouldn't be hard to find the story. just search for 孟母三遷. It is a chengyu. Quote
anonymoose Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:06 PM Author Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:06 PM Yes, I read the story you pasted, skylee. But I don't understand why 昔孟母,择邻处 had to be removed from the books, according to the article I linked to. It seems fairly inoccuous to me. As for 书中自有黄金屋,书中自有颜如玉, I like that. I think I'll make it my 座右铭. Quote
roddy Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:07 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:07 PM It's not the sentence so much as the story it's the title of - it implies that you should change your environment, rather than live with it in . . wait for it . . . harmony! Quote
skylee Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:09 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:09 PM I don't understand this -> 原告變被告 These things happen. Quote
roddy Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:15 PM Report Posted January 3, 2011 at 03:15 PM Yeah, it's one of those 'provincial authorities do something daft' stories - if you were nodding your head and saying 'yeah, that makes sense' you'd be ideal cadre material. Quote
