Rigelation Posted January 9, 2011 at 06:22 AM Report Posted January 9, 2011 at 06:22 AM Hi folks; I'm an undergraduate Chinese major in search of short-medium length, previously untranslated Chinese fiction that would be good material for my upcoming thesis. I've only recently reached the point where reading novels in Chinese is getting comfortable, so I am virtually knowledge-less when it comes to worthy modern authors. I've read 《我叫刘跃进》and some other short stories by 刘震云, some of 余华's short stories, and I'm just finishing 《侠客行》by 金庸 right now---that's literally the extent of my Chinese reading. Any suggestions for works in the 50-150pg range? Also, by modern, I mean anything post May 4th--I would also be interested in contemporaries of 鲁迅, 巴金, and 老舍 who may not have been renowned enough to have their works translated into English. Quote
JenniferW Posted January 10, 2011 at 09:33 AM Report Posted January 10, 2011 at 09:33 AM Have a look at this article: 'Women writers in 1940s Shanghai who were not Eileen Chang' http://www.danwei.org/books/women_writers_in_1940s_shangha.php I read several novellas / short stories by Eileen Chang recently, introduced to them by a Chinese friend doing a PhD on Eileen Chang's own translations of her work. So when I then read this article I looked forward to more reading by other writers from the same time and place - and I think I've drawn a blank! I think there are many stories here which have not yet been translated. Quote
renzhe Posted January 10, 2011 at 12:10 PM Report Posted January 10, 2011 at 12:10 PM This is mostly geared towards older stuff, but have a look here: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~dporter/sampler/sampler.html All high-quality stuff. Some of it was almost certainly translated (Lu Xun's Medicine and Xiao Hong's Hands, for example), but some of it not. It might give you some names to start searching. Another thing would be the short story of the month thread, in the Book of the Month subforum. There were some stories there. Quote
gato Posted January 10, 2011 at 12:51 PM Report Posted January 10, 2011 at 12:51 PM Here is a list of possible choices. http://book.douban.com/subject/1212913/ 《一个人的排行榜》以李敬泽、谢有顺、 祝勇三位文学评论人的视野,对1977年至2002年中国的短篇小说、中篇小说和散文进行排座次。
Pearl River Posted January 11, 2011 at 08:59 PM Report Posted January 11, 2011 at 08:59 PM Personally, I'm a big fan of 韩寒. He's a very talented young writer with a huge following in China. Last time I saw him on TV, he was mobbed liked a popstar. Anyway, here's a link to a short autobiographical piece he wrote back in 2006 (entitled 寒:十八禁) http://book.kanunu.org/files/little/2011/01-03-984.html For more info and work by 韩寒, here's another link: http://book.kanunu.org/html/2006/1101/4325.html Quote
