BFSU/Beiwai '11

Hey guys!

I'm going to BFSU for a long-term program in February. Just wanted to see if anyone's going then and wanted to start networking a bit. Besides that I had some questions about BFSU (the other topics about it are quite old).

1. How many students attend BFSU? I read somewhere that it's quite small with only 2000-ish students? Also heard that the females heavily outnumber the males there?

2. What's the quality of the Chinese program there, compared to BLCU, Tsinghua and Beida?

3. How good/bad is the Guojiao building?

Any answers or people who wanna talk would be awesome! :]

Sean,

Hows it going? I will be going to BFSU this March. Looks like you are taking a program that starts a week earlier? Cant answer question 1 and 2 of yours as im in the same boat, but two main reasons i chose BFSU are: (1) highly recommended from a friend of mine who used to study Mandarin in Beijing and he said 'one of the best Mandarin program in Beijing, and possibly in China' and (2) less English speaking foreign students, hence less opp to speak English.

For your last question, if you were thinking of single room - its already gone. I tried getting in but there are only double rooms left and there are no double rooms in the guojiao building. So i chose double room in the white building. Not sure about the quality and standards so anyone with insights, please do tell.

Hope to catch up with you on/around campus mate.

Hey Tedy,

Awesome! Yeah, officially my program starts in March, but they wanted me to register on the 23rd or 24th of February, dunno why, so I'll probably be there for a week without really doing anything. Whatever.

Yeah, I also heard some good stuff about BFSU. It's probably the best language university in China, at least, that's what I heard. One of the reasons why I chose BFSU was because of the amount of English speaking students there. At least I won't use my English too much, so I can practice my Chinese as much as possible. Although there'll probably be more Chinese students who want to practice their English with me lol.

Well, thankfully, I did manage to get a single room in the Guojiao Building, arranged it in December. So, I'm really glad about that. I heard it's probably the best dormitory for foreigners, but I guess I'll see. White building was pretty decent as well. Chances are that you'll be paired with a non-westerner though, the woman I arranged everything with at BFSU (the Regional Manager of the International Affairs office) said most westerners choose the single rooms, so you might be paired up with a Korean or Japanese :P.

Anyways, hope to see you at Beiwai in March then, shouldn't be that difficult, the amount of Western students there isn't that much haha. Although I still wonder how many students attend BFSU in total.

Hey Sean,

Thats really weird. Lets compare notes. My program starts on March 7th. My admission notice only mentioned me having to bring paperworks on March 3rd. May i ask how did you find out about when to register? Was it on the same admission notice or were you told separately. I'm just afraid that i might miss out on info that you received.

As for the accomm, you are one lucky bugger. They told me though that if there are single rooms becoming available, i might be able to change. Are you going to stay in Guojiao upon arrival?

Cheers

Hey Tedy,

I'm probably doing another program, your info should be correct (you register about a week or so before the program actually starts), so you should be fine. I just received my info from the admission notice (not told separately), so it should be fine.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with my room haha. Yup, I'll be staying in Guojiao upon arrival. It shouldn't be much of a problem to switch to a single room once one becomes available. How long will you be staying in Beijing? And where you from?

Hey Sean,

Alrighty. Which program are you doing? I will be doing the Full-Time Comprehensive Training Class starting march 7 till july 8th. The placement test would be on March 7th. I'm planning to be there for one semester and if i can stretch the money, i will reassess to do another semester. Are you doing a one year program?

I'm from Indonesia but been living in Australia for the past 11 years. How bout yourself?
