AJ14 Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:13 PM Report Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:13 PM Hi guys, I remember seeing on a website or forum post somewhere where there is software available to help translate by simply putting a mouse over a text or selecting it, can anyone please help me with the name of this program. Chinese websites which I need for my daily living in China are giving me the shits. Alex. Quote
aristotle1990 Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:25 PM Report Posted January 20, 2011 at 03:25 PM This post, perhaps? Short answer: MDBG Reader if you're willing to plunk over $59 (though there is a substantial academic discount), Lingoes if you're not. Or, if you know enough Chinese, the free version of PowerWord. trevelyan Posted January 22, 2011 at 08:23 PM Report Posted January 22, 2011 at 08:23 PM We obviously need to do a better job publicizing our Chinese dictionary plugin at Popup Chinese. Popup dictionary with over 200,000 words, integrated Google translate lookups, and the ability to add your own words and edit existing definitions. Totally free and it already supports Firefox 4 no problem. Quote
creamyhorror Posted January 23, 2011 at 12:28 PM Report Posted January 23, 2011 at 12:28 PM Popup dictionary with over 200,000 words Hmm, what dictionary is it? Quote

jbradfor Posted January 24, 2011 at 05:46 AM Report Posted January 24, 2011 at 05:46 AM @trevelyan: no support for traditional characters, no single-click enable/disable, and many words are not showing the pinyin for me? Besides that, it looks nice. But traditional characters is a deal-breaker for me. Quote
creamyhorror Posted January 25, 2011 at 04:22 PM Report Posted January 25, 2011 at 04:22 PM http://popupchinese.com/downloads I meant, what dictionary are you guys using? Is it based on CC-CEDICT, or something else? Quote
trevelyan Posted January 25, 2011 at 04:25 PM Report Posted January 25, 2011 at 04:25 PM No. It's a dictionary we've been compiling for more than eight years now. It's open source and distributed with ZDT and Pleco as well as through our site. Quote
yaokong Posted March 13, 2011 at 02:11 AM Report Posted March 13, 2011 at 02:11 AM What's the difference between the free version and the version for premium members? Quote
trevelyan Posted March 13, 2011 at 02:25 AM Report Posted March 13, 2011 at 02:25 AM Yaokong, The premium plugin is read/write in addition to read-only and comes bundled with functionality that sends additions to our on-site vocabulary lists (to send other words hit "A" for "add" while the plugin in showing). This lets us track edits so that when we upgrade the plugins or someone installs it on another browser it will come bundled with all of the words they've previously added. Designed more for translators than students.... That said, we give a seven-day free trial to everyone who signs up and the premium version can be downloaded then. We distribute most of the data open source, so we're less about sticking it to people than just encouraging people to sign-up and see what we've got. Best, --david Quote
