anonymoose Posted January 22, 2011 at 10:22 AM Report Posted January 22, 2011 at 10:22 AM In an effort to curb pollution, Taipei residents have been urged to use CDs to produce firecracker noise rather than the real thing, according to this article. What about noise pollution? I would rather someone invented a silent firecracker, rather than producing CDs of noise 1 Quote

Xiwang Posted January 23, 2011 at 04:15 AM Report Posted January 23, 2011 at 04:15 AM I see that Taipei's Department of Environmental Protection was making this recommendation even three years ago: http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/2008/01/26/140668/Taipei-City.htm Here are the government recordings you are being invited download: Firecrackers: http://ivy1.epa.gov.tw/noise/DD/media/002.mp3 Firecrackers with music: http://ivy1.epa.gov.tw/noise/DD/media/001.mp3 In my opinion, they don't sound anywhere close to the real thing. I doubt the evil spirits will be fooled. Quote
The World of Chinese Posted January 24, 2011 at 07:15 AM Report Posted January 24, 2011 at 07:15 AM Glad to see they're distributing digital versions, at least. I imagine producing a million "firecracker noise" CDs isn't great for the environment either... In reality, though, this is a disaster. Some people will inevitably still use real firecrackers, so the only result is that the jumpy foreigner has even more to fear. Anyone with a boombox or an MP3 player with speakers is now a threat! crazy-meiguoren Posted February 1, 2011 at 05:45 AM Report Posted February 1, 2011 at 05:45 AM How sterile. It could never be the same, not even close. Where's the fun of walking through the streets ankle-deep in firecracker paper? Quote
Outofin Posted February 3, 2011 at 07:39 PM Report Posted February 3, 2011 at 07:39 PM http://v.ku6.com/show/xl7Qtc4hPy8Oc9qg.html Bird's eye view at midnight Chinese New Year. The last half minute is like a sci-fi movie. The whole city is burning up colors and flashes. Quote
Chief123 Posted February 4, 2011 at 01:59 PM Report Posted February 4, 2011 at 01:59 PM I just got out of the hospital and wasn't really looking forward to coming home to Beruit/Baghdad/wherever but it's been constant for 3 days now. I must repent - not in a very Happy Rabbity mood right now. Quote
biotechguy Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:58 PM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:58 PM Pretty amazing article. I'd be curious how many residents used CDs Quote
rezaf Posted February 12, 2011 at 04:57 PM Report Posted February 12, 2011 at 04:57 PM I don't really think that anything can change some parts of the chinese culture as deep as this one. The noisiest night is always 初五(I think) because of the 财神。 I just hope that he heard our firecrackers. Quote
