Help with exercises

大家好!

你们可以帮我吗? :)

I am completing exercises from my textbook, and trying to figure out one bit in particular... It's a simple "complete the dialogue" exercise. I will post the exercise, with the parts I have completed underlined:

A: 您要买什么?

B: 我要买光盘。 质量好不好?

A: 这个牌子的光盘很好。

B: 多少钱?

A: 八十块一盒, 一盒有四十张。

B: 那个牌子怎么样?

A: 那个牌子也不错,九十八一盒,也是四十张。

B: 我买八十块一盒的。

A: 你要买多少盒?

B: 我买五盒。有折扣马?

A: 可以,八十五一盒吧。

B: 给你钱。

So the bit I don't understand is the bit in red text. I don't fully understand what needs to be said... The way I see it, speaker B decides to buy the cheaper box of CDs, and they say 一盒的. However, the next time B speaks they are saying they will take five boxes, so, I assumed speaker A would ask: 你要买多少盒?

So, my question, I suppose, is why did B say 一盒的, if they wanted 5 boxes, wouldn't it have been more correct to say: 五盒的。 or is this a sentence structure I am just unfamiliar with? Maybe I've just been staring at it too long :)

Any help given would be much appreciated!

谢谢你们!

八十块一盒的 is 80 kuai per box, so he's buying 5 boxes of the brand that costs 80 kuai per box (of 40 CDs), as opposed to the ones that cost 98 kuai per box.

What I don't get is that he says he'll offer him a discount at 85 kuai per box, which is 5 kuai more expensive

Thanks for your response!

oops! I made a mistake typing the reduction... it should have said 七十五块!

So..... does "一盒的" equate to English "per box"? and if so, could you use that construction with other measures like 一杯的, or 一快的 etc?

Thanks for all the help,

much appreciated!

Nope - "一盒的" is part of the larger "八十块一盒的光盘", where everything before 的 is the modifier for 光盘, the whole phrase meaning "(the) CDs that cost 80 RMB per box". The reason why 光盘 is dropped in this particular case is because it's been already mentioned and both know that they're talking about CDs.

No, it's not like that.

A: 这个牌子的光盘很好。

B: 多少钱?

A: 八十块一盒, 一盒有四十张。

...

B: 我买八十块一盒的[牌子]。 (ellipsis)

Literally,

我买 [八十块一盒] 的 [牌子] = I'll buy the [eighty-bucks-a-box] [brand].

我买 [八十块一盒] [的] = I'll buy the [eighty-bucks-a-box] [one].

Similarly,

我买 [便宜] [的] = I'll buy the [cheaper] [one].
