New Members Cea Posted February 7, 2011 at 02:47 PM New Members Report Posted February 7, 2011 at 02:47 PM I am reading a chinese book about scenography and I have found some foreign names, but I cannot understand who these people are. I hope somebody can help me with the transcriprion! Below I will write the name I am looking for and the sentence in which I found it, I will add further infomation if I have: 1。梅纳西埃 (在梅纳西埃设计的«土地»中,真鸡上台,“咯咯”作声,真砖砌墙,一切都与生后相同。) 2。维里雅姆斯 (斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基体系培养了西莫夫、戈洛文以及德米特里耶夫、维里雅姆斯、雷京等舞美设计大师。。。) The author is talking about scenographers who were bound to Stanislavskij or to his way of thinking. I guess it can be Williams...but Williams who!? 3。雷京 (斯坦尼斯拉夫斯基体系培养了西莫夫、戈洛文以及德米特里耶夫、维里雅姆斯、雷京等舞美设计大师。。。) Names of scenographers again...do you think this is a chinese name or a transcription of a foreign name? 4。奥洛夫斯基 (20世纪后半叶著名的舞美设计师若群星灿烂,美国有朱·梅尔齐纳、沃里弗甘格·洛特、李名觉,苏联又奥洛夫斯基、马伦尼克、柯切尔金。。。) Sounds of Orlovskij, but, still, I cannot find any scenographer named Orlowskij. 5。 。。) Thank you for your help! Ciao  Quote

cababunga Posted February 7, 2011 at 11:37 PM Report Posted February 7, 2011 at 11:37 PM Would Google translate be considered cheating? 1. Mena West 2. so translation engine doesn't know this particular combination of characters, but you can try to search for something like +williams +scenographer stanislavskij to get some hints. 3. Lei Jing 4. Criolo Ostrovsky 5. Nick Mullen 6. Ke Qieer 7. Guliyefu 8. failed here as well. 9. Qiani Qi Looks like most of the transliterated Western names have more then one way of un-transliterating them available to the translator. Please go to http://translate.google.com/ to see them all. liuzhou Posted February 8, 2011 at 07:57 AM Report Posted February 8, 2011 at 07:57 AM Please go to http://translate.google.com/ I wouldn't go to Google translate to find my way across the road. It is not cheating; it is just useless. There is an at least semi-official dictionary of transliteration of names E ›C, but I wouldn't know how to reverse it. They are largely going to be phonetic, so a large amount of guesswork with knowledge in that particular field will be necessary. Quote
gato Posted February 8, 2011 at 10:07 AM Report Posted February 8, 2011 at 10:07 AM You will need to find some reference books on Eastern European scenography (choreography? set design?) and try to match them up. We are lacking expertise in that field at the moment. Quote
cababunga Posted February 8, 2011 at 06:26 PM Report Posted February 8, 2011 at 06:26 PM I wouldn't go to Google translate to find my way across the road. Yeah, I'm sure it wasn't designed for such use case. But seriously, I agree that machine translation rarely makes a lot of sense. However in this particular case nobody is asking for making sense out of text snippets. All is required is to look up words in a large database, which I think gave some useful results. No? Considering time spent in comparison to "... need to find some reference books on Eastern European scenography..."? Quote
New Members IsA Posted February 8, 2011 at 07:33 PM New Members Report Posted February 8, 2011 at 07:33 PM 1. 梅纳西埃 (在梅纳西埃设计的«土地»中,真鸡上台,“咯咯”作声,真砖砌墙,一切都与生后相同。) should be Alfred Manessier, French painter. btw, are you Italian? Quote
Jane_PA Posted February 8, 2011 at 10:21 PM Report Posted February 8, 2011 at 10:21 PM Hi Cea, I have some small tip to do this, but may not work for all the names, unless those names are very famous. I usually do this way, input the Chinese name and the word 英文 into google together. For example: Enter "奥洛夫斯基 英文" in Google, it will pop up the following links, some of them may contain the English names. http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&q=%E5%A5%A5%E6%B4%9B%E5%A4%AB%E6%96%AF%E5%9F%BA+%E8%8B%B1%E6%96%87&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=7ba617208c187de5 Still, the condition is that 奥洛夫斯基 is real famous. New Members Cea Posted February 9, 2011 at 02:34 PM Author New Members Report Posted February 9, 2011 at 02:34 PM Hi everybody! Thank you all for your reply! Ciao IsA, yes I am Italian! Alfred Manessier...I run into this French painter too...but now I see that there is also a picture in this book and the caption says: "自然主义戏剧«土地»照片 梅纳西埃设计 1902年". So I can understand that the scenography was made in 1902. I did some research about Manessier and he was born in 1911  Dear Jane, I will try your method! Thanks! Hi Cababunga! I also have some douts about Google translate. But I do agree with you: it is a large database. Moreover, sometimes, in Chinese, they just translate the surname and it is really difficoult to understand who they are really talking about. Dear Gato, I have already read two books on scenography in Italian, and I found some names I was looking for. I will try with some other texts, also in English if I can find! Thank you all again! Daniela If you have other hints, please write them! Quote
jbradfor Posted February 9, 2011 at 04:03 PM Report Posted February 9, 2011 at 04:03 PM Another way that sometimes works is to search on the Chinese version of Wikipedia. For example, picking 奥洛夫斯基 at random, yields this page, from which you can lean that his name is אורי אורלב in Hebrew and Jerzy Henryk Orłowski is Polish. Sometimes if there is no translation in that page, you can switch to the English (or some other language) of the same page. But again, this assumes the person is famous enough to be in wikipedia.... Michaelyus Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:16 AM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:16 AM Alfred Manessier...I run into this French painter too...but now I see that there is also a picture in this book and the caption says: "自然主义戏剧«土地»照片 梅纳西埃设计 1902年". So I can understand that the scenography was made in 1902. I did some research about Manessier and he was born in 1911 I believe this is an error: from my Internet sleuthing it seems that the 1902 staging of Zola's « La Terre » was directed by André Antoine, live chickens and all. Manessier would very likely be the source of this transliteration though. I tend to like breaking it down into "梅纳" "西埃" and running a Google search on that. It may give you collections of names that also bear these sounds; this particular one may also be used for Menacier / Manacier etc. Quote
