semantic nuance Posted February 10, 2011 at 09:39 AM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 09:39 AM The wife of my father's elder brother is called 伯母, (younger brother's wife: 嬸嬸). My nephew calls my 嬸嬸 as 嬸婆. I have no problem answering his question about what he should call my father's elder brother's wife in Taiwanese. However, it beat me when my little nephew asked me how to say that in Chinese. Any idea? Quote
skylee Posted February 10, 2011 at 10:20 AM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 10:20 AM Whose son is your nephew? PS - would this help? (Note that it does not distinguish between 嬸嬸 and 伯母, thus there is only 嬸婆 for a generation down) -> http://www.expatinta...t/family-names/ Here we use 伯娘 instead of 伯母. Quote
semantic nuance Posted February 10, 2011 at 10:58 AM Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 10:58 AM My brother's son calls me 姑姑, so my 嬸嬸 is his 嬸婆. But I cannot find a term to tell him what he should call my 伯母. That link you posted does not have a term for that either. 叔公 -嬸婆. 伯公--? How does my nephew call 伯公 's wife? Quote
skylee Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:07 PM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:07 PM Would 老奶奶 do (I am being creative here)? And tell him to ask his father, or your 伯母 direct. Quote
skylee Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:25 PM Report Posted February 10, 2011 at 01:25 PM It has just occurred to me : how about 祖伯母? Some people actually use it. Take a look -> http://dianeyang37.pixnet.net/blog/post/44004314 Also take a look at this -> http://zh.wikisource.org/zh-hant/%E5%A4%A7%E5%AD%B8%E8%A1%8D%E7%BE%A9%E8%A3%9C/%E5%8D%B7053 《爾雅》曰:父為考,母為妣(生曰父母,死曰考妣)。 1 Quote
