New Members Richcormack Posted February 12, 2011 at 01:42 PM New Members Report Posted February 12, 2011 at 01:42 PM I have been in talks with a rep from angelinas cafe since december. She secured me a job in Hefei, in the province of Anhui. All was going well until today i got an email saying this. yesterday i went to the foreign affairs mangement department to ask for the certificate of your work permit, but the leader told me that your TEFL just 20hours, please learn a kind of the certificate more than 100 hours as quickly as you can , and i will help you to ask for certificate in China, we work together to make sure you can come to our school quickly. Come on my friend, I believe we can cooperate happily Now, i infact have a 50 hour tefl but that is still short of 100 and given the time and financial constraints i have. I cant do another course and dont see why i should. There has been no mention of this Tefl issue in the 3 months i have been sorting out this job. Any advice? Quote
kdavid Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:41 AM Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:41 AM If that's what they want, there's really nothing you can do about it. Restrictions are starting to get tighter. If the government offices want a TEFL/TESOL certificate of over 100 hours, then that's what they want. You can always try and find a job elsewhere. Quote
roddy Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:44 AM Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:44 AM Yeah - another province, maybe even another city, may work. Interesting to see some places at least are starting to distinguish between TEFL courses, even if it is a pretty crude measure. Quote
trevelyan Posted February 14, 2011 at 01:53 PM Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 01:53 PM If you're outside Beijing and Shanghai, there shouldn't really be this sort of requirement for teaching hours or even ESL certification. And especially not in Hefei! So I'd guess this is just a soft effort to extract more money from your employer in return for providing the work visa. The law technically allows work experience to count against the requirement, so if you have anything like that it might be worth mentioning it. Otherwise, you're dealing with people who have incentives not to help you and are probably best served going elsewhere. Quote
DrZero Posted February 14, 2011 at 08:00 PM Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 08:00 PM I don't like saying this, but when I have seen these kinds of "snags" occur, they have tended to be smokescreens for when the employer has decided not to hire the person for other reasons. Quite commonly it's because they have located a candidate closer to what they are looking for from a race or age perspective. In other words, they have located a white and/or younger candidate to hire, and they feed the black/Asian/older candidate a bunch of excuses. Quote
New Members Richcormack Posted February 15, 2011 at 10:25 AM Author New Members Report Posted February 15, 2011 at 10:25 AM Yeah i see what your saying, ive started looking for another job. However I received an email this morning saying this. Hello! How are you? Sorry to have you wait so long. we are trying our best to solve the problem(TEFL). Would you please wait for my news. Suki and I will sent an email to you as soon as we get the news from the government. There is a saying in China: It is the first step that costs troublesome. I think we will do everything smoothly. Happy every day! By the way, would you like to have a look at the scenery(Hefei)?( The pictures are attached to this email) So i am still waiting... <_< Quote
