hackinger Posted February 13, 2011 at 09:17 PM Report Share Posted February 13, 2011 at 09:17 PM Hello, the Pimsleur Mandarin audio course has some fame, but the entire set of CDs is not cheap. Part I sells, e.g., at amazon.com for more than 200 dollars. The Pismleur course is also available as a set of audio books for instance at Audible. If one signs up there for a subscription, one can get each part for the subscription price. I signed up with audible.de where I had to buy one audio book per month for 10 Euros. I therefore paid 30 Euros in total, 10 Euros each for Parts 1, 2 and 3. (You have to be careful to select for instance Part I, Lesson 1 -30, because each individual lesson is also available as audio book like Part I, Lesson 1.) You can usually cancel the subscription after three months. Or continue your membership and buy another Pimsleur course for you next vacation destination... Audible, AFAIK, has been acquired by amazon and in addition to audible.com there are the European portals audible.co.uk, audible.fr, audible.de and possibly others. Most of them should have a similar deal. Audible.de currently offers the initial three months for an even better 4,95 Euros. Obviously you need to check the conditions for canceling the subscription. The audio books can be played back on the PC, on Apple devices like iPhone and iPod touch and on many other mp3 players. Cheers hackinger P.S. Using these audio books, I completed the 90 lessons of the Pimsleur Mandarin course in the 90 days suggested by the Pimsleur people and quite enjoyed it. LA Guy Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:50 AM Report Share Posted February 14, 2011 at 06:50 AM Curiously ( or more honestly, frustrating ), I don't believe there is any textbook with the PinYin or Chinese Characters that go along with the audio dialogues. It seems that Pimsleur believes that the workbook is unnecessary. LA Guy
Gibbs Posted February 15, 2011 at 02:12 AM Report Share Posted February 15, 2011 at 02:12 AM why buy new when you can buy used? $129 up front, then when you are done, you return the discs and receive $100 back. http://www.pimsleurmarketplace.com/inc/sdetail/6231
