trevelyan Posted February 14, 2011 at 02:10 PM Report Posted February 14, 2011 at 02:10 PM Hi everyone, I know many of the regulars here have already visited Popup Cantonese. Since we haven't technically announced the site yet, I wanted to put up a quick note so we're indexed in Roddy's site-search and anyone who's missed the news can read the details here. So... if you haven't visited Popup Cantonese yet, please consider yourself welcome to drop by. Popup Cantonese is our new sister-site to Popup Chinese dedicated to learning Cantonese online. It has the usual roster of Cantonese lessons, a Cantonese dictionary (under development) and our usual assortment of character writing tools. We've been online for about two months now, and already have around 20 totally free lessons, with more coming out each week. As with our site for learning Chinese, the podcasts and lessons are totally free, and we support production costs by offering premium transcripts and some ancillary mp3 files to site supporters. All that said, there is a major difference between our Chinese and Cantonese sites. The biggest is that our initial focus with Popup Cantonese is rolling out lessons for absolute beginners. We're focusing on building a ramp that teaches the basics (tone recognition and critical phrases) before getting into more intensive dialogue-centric and advanced lessons. That said, lesson production is ongoing, and we're releasing an average of 2 lessons per week. So if you're interested in learning Cantonese please do check it out! And if you already speak Cantonese and have suggestions or feedback, please let me know too. A final random note -- we are interested in finding native English speakers with some Cantonese experience for recording work. If you're in Hong Kong or Beijing and are interested in working with us, we'd be interested in hearing from you. Our contact information is on the site. Please also feel free to message me through the forums here. Quote
aristotle1990 Posted February 15, 2011 at 03:49 AM Report Posted February 15, 2011 at 03:49 AM Oh my, this is awesome. I have a strong personal interest in Cantonese, though there are not that many great online resources, and as a result I never tried seriously studying it. This may change things. Thanks! Quote
Hofmann Posted February 15, 2011 at 04:47 AM Report Posted February 15, 2011 at 04:47 AM I've never seen a good online summary of basic grammar, like topic-comment, SOV, copula, etc. Vocabulary is easy to find with all the dictionaries, but people need a skeleton (syntax) in which to stick the flesh (vocab). Something like this. Quote
