saikyo Posted February 15, 2011 at 03:56 AM Report Posted February 15, 2011 at 03:56 AM Hello everyone! Going to be moving back to China for a couple years and wanted to get myself set up with a good VPN service. I have used WiTopia in the past, and other than the fact that they take the liberty of blocking some bittorrent related sites for you, it was a very stable and reliable experience. I have used TOR but performance was always spotty. Any other recommendations? I need a real VPN and not just a proxy. Any advice appreciated! Quote
pancake Posted February 15, 2011 at 06:52 AM Report Posted February 15, 2011 at 06:52 AM I switched from Witopia to Freedur. Works great: nothing is blocked and I can even access stuff like Hulu without any issues. The only downside is their somewhat bloated client: it's a bundled version of privoxy that tends to consume 200+ MB RAM on my system (I use OS X). EDIT: Sorry, didn't ready your message carefully enough. Freedur works as a HTTP(S) proxy, and is not a full VPN. Quote
roddy Posted February 16, 2011 at 05:23 AM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 05:23 AM For what it's worth, I've never noticed any issues with Witopia and torrents - I've read that they do some blocking, but it's either not all trackers, or not all gateways, or something. And to be honest I can live with the service I send online banking transactions through being at least somewhat law-abiding. Quote
pancake Posted February 16, 2011 at 06:39 AM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 06:39 AM Roddy: What happens if you try to access this popular Swedish torrent site? And, unless your Internet banking is implemented by morons, it should not matter which VPN/Proxy/whatever service you use. But I get it: Witopia are sponsors of this site. I will concede that their "censorship" is very minimal; certainly way, way, better than the Great Firewall. But it does exist, and pretending otherwise seems disingenuous to me. EDIT: Especially since they acknowledge it themselves. From their FAQ Do you have bandwidth limits, transfer limits, or censor content? No. There are no bandwidth or transfer limits and we censor no content with the exception of sites that are repeatedly known for offering illegal content. roddy Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:26 AM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:26 AM It opens, I tested a torrent, it worked fine. Couldn't reach all of the trackers, but didn't seem to stop the file downloading. I usually use demonoid, thebox, eztv. Do you think I only posted the above as we're a Witopia affiliate? If so, go ahead and say so. Quote
pancake Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:48 AM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:48 AM It opens, I tested a torrent, it worked fine. Couldn't reach all of the trackers, but didn't seem to stop the file downloading. I usually use demonoid, thebox, eztv. Huh, well I'm honestly surprised since it's an example of a site that did not work back when I was their customer. Do you think I only posted the above as we're a Witopia affiliate? If so, go ahead and say so. That was my thought, yes. I guess I was wrong, so I apologise for suggesting you were shilling for Witopia. Quote
roddy Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:56 AM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 07:56 AM Not just a disingenuous shill, but an incompetent one who forgets to post the affiliate link or even a link to the affiliate link. Charming. Apology accepted though. I was using the Hong Kong gateway, and Google's DNS. That may make a difference - certainly if you're in China you want to be using overseas DNS. I suspect if you ask Witopia what they block they'll tell you, I've always found the customer service to be decent. Quote
saikyo Posted February 16, 2011 at 12:25 PM Author Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 12:25 PM Try ISOHUNT.com that's the one I had trouble with before. Quote
roddy Posted February 16, 2011 at 12:32 PM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 12:32 PM Site came up fine, downloaded a torrent, tracker timed out but it found peers and the download started. Quote
luozhen Posted February 16, 2011 at 02:38 PM Report Posted February 16, 2011 at 02:38 PM Why can't you close the VPN for torrents? My VPN is closed about half the time anyway, as it slows down all the Chinese sites. Quote
kayro Posted April 3, 2011 at 03:58 PM Report Posted April 3, 2011 at 03:58 PM Anybody using Freedur? Tried out the service after reading these forums and it worked well for about 2 weeks, but havent been able to access FB or YouTub for the last week... Quote
pancake Posted April 4, 2011 at 04:57 AM Report Posted April 4, 2011 at 04:57 AM Kayro: I am using Freedur, seems to mostly work, but it's possibly slower than before. Quote
kayro Posted April 4, 2011 at 09:29 AM Report Posted April 4, 2011 at 09:29 AM Pancake: Thanks. I figured it out when I noticed that IE was working fine. Had to change my firefox settings from "auto detect proxy settings" to "use system proxy settings"... Quote
kayro Posted April 21, 2011 at 01:19 PM Report Posted April 21, 2011 at 01:19 PM Just to quickly resurrect this thread - has anyone had luck getting Freedur to work on their Android phones? I've followed the instructions on the Freedur site for using the VPN on android phones, but it wont connect; my SIM is China Mobile. Quote
icebear Posted July 3, 2012 at 09:49 PM Report Posted July 3, 2012 at 09:49 PM Any recent recommendations? Freedur's site seems to have domain squatters on it. How about SSL tunneling with Witopia? Quote
imron Posted July 3, 2012 at 11:33 PM Report Posted July 3, 2012 at 11:33 PM I still recommend the same method I always have (with more detailed config and setup directions here). Quote
icebear Posted July 3, 2012 at 11:39 PM Report Posted July 3, 2012 at 11:39 PM imron, the two links are the same... Quote
