New Members Chan Posted February 20, 2011 at 05:17 PM New Members Report Posted February 20, 2011 at 05:17 PM I have this Mandarin question which I'm stuck on and I really need help on this question please. The book is saying "Rewrite the following using "的" Here's what I have to rewrite, 1)The one who wears the black skirt is my sister. 2)The pineapple you bought this morning is sour. Those are the two questions and in the sentence when rewritten 的 is supposed to be the second last character with the subject in front of it. I'll give an example of one of the questions my teacher helped me with. Ex)The people who have had dinner. Answer) 吃了晚饭的人 Quote
creamyhorror Posted February 21, 2011 at 02:46 AM Report Posted February 21, 2011 at 02:46 AM The structure to use is [descriptor] 的 [type of subject] [verb phrase] e.g. The person climbing the tree is very brave. [爬树] 的 [人] [很勇敢] Quote

I think what you mean is that 的 should be the second last character in the phrase refering to the subject of the sentence. To make 的 the penultimate character in the whole sentence is not possible for the sentences given. 1)The one who wears the black skirt is my sister. 穿着黑裙子的(人)是我妹妹。 2)The pineapple you bought this morning is sour. 你今早买的菠萝很酸。 Quote
skylee Posted February 21, 2011 at 03:20 AM Report Posted February 21, 2011 at 03:20 AM 穿黑裙子的人是我姐姐 / 妹妹。 你今天早上買的菠蘿很酸。 的 is supposed to be the second last character with the subject in front of it. Not necessarily second last character (it depends on how long the word for the subject is), 的 is put between the subject and the adjective/phrase describing the subject. PS - sister = 妈妈 (X) Quote
Hofmann Posted February 22, 2011 at 01:30 AM Report Posted February 22, 2011 at 01:30 AM These sentences contain subordinate clauses. 1)The one who wears the black skirt is my sister. You can think of "The one is my sister" as the outer sentence and "She wears the black shirt" as an inner sentence. In Chinese, you can use the outer sentence to structure your sentence. "她是我的姐姐/妹妹。" and insert the subordinate clause, replacing 她 with "穿黑裙子的[人]" "穿黑裙子的[人]是我的姐姐/妹妹。" 2)The pineapple [that] you bought this morning is sour. Same with this sentence. "The pineapple is sour." "You bought that this morning." "菠蘿酸" "你今天早上買它." "你今天早上買的菠蘿酸。" Quote
