kdavid Posted February 25, 2011 at 11:03 PM Report Posted February 25, 2011 at 11:03 PM Hello All, Below is a poll for an article I'm writing for The World of Chinese. We have some not so serious questions that we’d like to ask you. There are quite a few here. If you're short on time and only want to respond to a hand full, any contribution would be greatly appreciated. I'll also be posting the same post (but in Chinese) in the reading and writing section. 1. In 2009 we watched the movie “2012.” A lot of people think the world will end in 2012. Do you think so? If so, how will the world end? (Floods, volcanoes or aliens?) 2. If the end of the world came tomorrow, what would be the most valuable thing in your life that could save you? 3. One hundred years from now, what will Chinese people most need? Money? Love? Blue skies? 4. Fifty years from now, if you’re still living, what will you most miss about the present? 5. In your life time, will you hire a robot to bring you breakfast / do your laundry / clean your house? 6. If you could engineer the perfect man / woman (duixiang) in the future, what would that person look like/be like? 7. It’s impossible to buy a house in China nowadays, what will people do in the future?Move into space? Relocate to Beijing’s 12th Ring Road? 8. In a hundred years, what three items from your household will be obsolete? Computer? Chopsticks? Toothbrush? 9. What did you eat for breakfast today? What will you eat for breakfast 100 years from now? 10. In 2050, will you still be cramming your / your child’s head with English? Or will you kick back and wait for the world to talk to you in Chinese? 11. In the future, will Chinese people still be desperately trying to go abroad to study, apply for green cards and change their passports? 12. How many countries officially speak Chinese now? (Answer: 2. China/HK/Taiwan and Singapore). How many countries will officially speak Chinese in 100 years? 13. One hundred years from now, how long will people live? 14. In the 1990s, double eyelid surgery was all the rage. Before that, tattooed eyebrows and liplines were in. Now, there are many kinds of “lifts”—facelift, breast lift, butt lift. What kind of “lifts” (or general plastic surgery) will be most popular in the future? 15. Let’s pick a lucky number. In 2088, what will be the weirdest Olympic sporting competition? 16. We now proudly say we have 1.3 billion compatriots. What will China’s population be in 100 years? 17. What kind of a job will make the most money in the future? 18. Do you have mostly female friends or male friends now? In the future, will you still be able to answer this question clearly? 19. Do you drive now? Bike? E-Bike? How will you get around in the future? 20. What do you think one jin of rice will cost in 100 years? One gallon of gas? 21. In 100 years, will people still remember who Jay Chou was? 22. What will you do for fun in 100 years? 23. Chinese people think of when they think of China in the early 21st century? 24. Development in the 20th century was often driven or prompted by American inventions like cars, airplanes, spaceships, the internet, microwavable burritos, etc. What awesome stuff will China invent to change the world in the 21st century? 25. Right now, everyone seems to love buying those tiny yappy purse dogs. What will the “hot” pets be in China in 2088? Will they be real animals, or genetically engineered? 26. What will the average temperature on summer day in Beijing be in 2111? 27. What 成语 will best describe China’s experience in the 21st century? Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:12 PM Report Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:12 PM Are these questions tailored to Chinese people? Quote
kdavid Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:44 PM Author Report Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:44 PM @Scoobyqueen The majority of the questions were written for Chinese by Chinese. You can find the Chinese equivalents in the Chinese corner forum. Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:48 PM Report Posted February 26, 2011 at 02:48 PM The responses from westerners are probably going to be significantly different. Unless you are planning a comparison, does it make sense for westerners to respond? Quote
kdavid Posted February 26, 2011 at 10:54 PM Author Report Posted February 26, 2011 at 10:54 PM @Scoobyqueen Good point, and you're right. My objective for posting here was to: A) Get variety B) Appeal to Chinese on the forums who want to practice their English (and may not visit the Chinese corner) Quote
