的 pronounced as 'di' - is that a southern Chinese thing?

Yes, Wuhan does indeed have a 's' for 'sh' thing, as well as 'z' for 'zh', 'c' for 'ch' and 'n' for 'ng'. 'r' becomes either 'l' or non-pinyin 'z' (as in breeze), and 'n' and 'l' are in free variation. For example, (I was actually asked this by a street vendor) 这是你的女朋友吗? can come out as 'zè sì lǐ de lǚpényou ma?'

Ouch, maybe I'm looking for too much, but any suggestions on a place with decent weather(I've survived a winter, but just barely, in Anhui) and also has fairly 標準的普通話?
