totgafk Posted March 9, 2011 at 01:00 PM Report Posted March 9, 2011 at 01:00 PM Hello, I'm currently a Tsinghua Chinese language program student. I have a residence permit and it expires on July 31st. Since I recently applied for the CSC Fall 2011-Spring 2012 Scholarship, I do not plan to pay Tsinghua's Fall '11 semester tuition (the amount is not refundable). Consequently, I need to figure out what to do for a visa after July 31st. (I only need a Visa up until the start of the Fall '11 semester.) Special note: If I don't receive the CSC scholarship, I will probably enroll back at Tsinghua (or Beida). [i'll pay tuition in late August/early September.] Last note: I will not be able to work/sign-up for a summer Chinese language program. So, please don't recommend those as options for a Visa. I'm actually planning to take the LSAT in October; so, I need to study for that *non-stop* from the end of June until October... Quote
fanglu Posted March 9, 2011 at 08:35 PM Report Posted March 9, 2011 at 08:35 PM Probably a tourist visa is your only option. You could try an agency if they still exist and see if there's some way to get one without leaving the country. Otherwise I guess you'll need to do a visa run to Hong Kong (or Korea etc). Quote

So you don't need to be in China during this time? Humm..... any other place you want to go? [ignorant question: for other types of visa, e.g. L visa, the visa expiration date shows the latest you can enter China, and each time you enter China you can stay for some period of time from the day you enter. Do X visas work differently? e.g. the visa expiration date shows the latest you are allowed to be in China?] Quote
fanglu Posted March 9, 2011 at 10:43 PM Report Posted March 9, 2011 at 10:43 PM Do X visas work differently? e.g. the visa expiration date shows the latest you are allowed to be in China? The X visa only lets you enter once, and stay for 30 days. Within 30 days of entering China you get a residence permit (which is I presume what the OP is talking about) which just has an expiry date. Before the expiry date you can come and go as you please. Quote
totgafk Posted March 9, 2011 at 11:38 PM Author Report Posted March 9, 2011 at 11:38 PM Thanks for all the great replies! It is a residence permit. I corrected the OP. I would prefer not to leave China (except for a HK run). The rent on my apartment is paid all the way until Sept. 1. Quote
