Ian_Lee Posted November 23, 2004 at 12:05 AM Report Posted November 23, 2004 at 12:05 AM Ox Pxxxx is very popular in Cantonese and Vietnamese cuisine. Before the invention of Viagra, Ox Pxxxx was believed to be really helpful to many middle age guys who had problems in sex. Mostly the Ox Pxxxx is eaten in the winter time (Cantonese believe that it is extremely "Yang" and can lead to nose bleeding if you devour it in the summer). They are usually served in hot stew in the restaurant. Frankly speaking, if you are not told in advance, you will think that it is just beef tendon. Hmmm....But if you know in advance and check it in detail, you can tell which is which in your pot. Vietnamese also love Ox Pxxxx as much as Cantonese do. In pre-'75 Cholon (Chinatown) in Saigon, the open food stall filled up the Pxxxx with hot broth and tied it up tightly on both ends. Then they hanged this 2-3 ft long stuff up to entice gourmets. Nowadays even in US, some Vietnamese Pho eateries also offer Ox Pxxxx if you request. Quote
liuzhou Posted November 23, 2004 at 11:08 AM Report Posted November 23, 2004 at 11:08 AM Several years ago, I spent some time in Jamaica, where "cow cock soup" was (and presumably still is) a common dish. I did point out that a cow was unlikely to have such an appendage, but was told to shut up and eat up. Pedantry never goes down well over dinner. However, the soup went down very well indeed. The locals also ensured me that the more I ate the happier my wife would be! So it seems not to be confined to Asia. Quote
