imAshlyn Posted March 16, 2011 at 12:00 PM Report Share Posted March 16, 2011 at 12:00 PM Hello, I'm Ashlyn and I'm a newbie here. I was wondering if someone could help me with me and my little sister's chinese name. I've decided that our last name would be 杜, because someone we truly respect had that as a surname. But we have no idea how to create our first names and we know that Chinese is a difficult language, so we haven't got the guts to try by ourselves. I've been thinking about using "Jade" as one of our characters, but after I've been looking into the dictionaries, like Nciku. I was confused because there are so many character with the same meaning, and I couldn't decided which one to use. And the only thing we know for sure about the other character is that we want the other character to resembles something calm and serene. So, in conclusion, we hope that our names would contain the same character that meant Jade and the other character to make our names sound serene. Thanks in advance for all your replies, Ashlyn. jbradfor Posted March 17, 2011 at 01:09 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 01:09 AM I'm sorry for being crude, but personally I think "Jade" is a bad name; along with "Lily" and "Lotus", it sounds like a Chinese porn star name. But that's probably just me. Anyone know if 玉, for example, is common in names? Or would you like something like 琳?
imron Posted March 17, 2011 at 01:27 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 01:27 AM Anyone know if 玉, for example, is common in names? It's quite common in male names. I have quite a few friends with this character in their names.
semantic nuance Posted March 17, 2011 at 02:06 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 02:06 AM How about 杜玉寧? 寧 can mean 'calm', or 'serene'. Or you may try 安, which is also 'calm', 'settled', 'safe'. 靜 is serene, tranquil, silent. By the way, 玉靜 is a very common Chinese name. jbradfor Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:14 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:14 AM It's quite common in male names. Would it be appropriate for females as well?
skylee Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:17 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:17 AM 玉 is common in names, male or female.
skylee Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:58 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2011 at 03:58 AM Apart from 靜, 安 and 寧, you could also consider 謐, which also means quiet/clam. Or 恬. And in addition to 玉, you could also consider 翠, which also means jade (green jade). I had a boss (a guy) whose name is 定寧. It is quite clear that his parents wanted him to be very quiet and calm.
