Hi!

I’m interested in translating the phrase: 家和萬事興, I get it’s about family harmony but would like to know more in depth what it implies.

I’m also looking for short sayings/idioms about family value. How could you say things like: “family’s first”, “family is most important”, or “Holy family” (like Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus).

Any ideas? I’m glad for anyu help.

Cheers!

“家和萬事興”,indicates that if there's no arguments within family and every member respects each other, then everything happened to family member will be toward the right direction. For example, father will do business successfully; grandparents will live long and healthy; child will study good at school etc...

As for some other idioms,'家是永远的避风港' tells family is the forever peaceful place for you to avoid from stress, depression outside.

talk of which the family idioms, try this one:

良田万顷,不若一技傍身。

translation: to possess a certain skill (to make money or whatever) is better then (to own) a vast rich land.

one of the most famous family idiom(家训) in china was in the year 223AD (three kingdom period), when Liu Bei was about to die, he told his son Liu Shan an idiom:

勉之,勉之。勿以善小而不为,勿以恶小而为之。

translation: (always) strive, strive hard! Don't avoid to do anything good even if that is so tiny to ever help anyone, don't ever do anything bad even if that is so unimportant. (basicly is the some as:The little kindness for, is a sin to steal a pin )

:P

i bet there must be one that you need:

tho it seems that finding it might take some time :P

and

as in ancient chinese morals, "country/motherland" is always (required) to be put before one's own matters/feelings, i doubt you would find one with exactly that meaning

(compared to "国事", "儿女私情" is usually a rather derogatory term,,,,,,as is best shown by the mindset of 慕容复 of 金庸's《天龙八部》 B)
