飞霞, 凯霞, 永珍, 永爱

I've asked my chinese friend to give me and my sister some chinese names that are not too common with a good meaning. The names she provided are as above.

What do you think about them? Which is your favorite?

Which one should I choose?

Please tell me.

Thanks,

Ashlyn.

Please do not send me a PM if you are going to post the question on the forum.

I have typed the following as a PM reply. I am posting here so as not to waste it. Not sure if it is useful to you, or to anyone else.

"First of all, I think you need to know that any chinese characters (or combination of any two, or even three, characters) can be used as given names in Chinese (though of course some may not be good, and some are common/uncommon combinations). Personally I prefer names with common words and common meanings. Names using unusual words are not always my cup of tea. I think such names could sound very pretentious.

I do not use simplifed characters (which you have used). But I think you are not good at Chinese so I will use the simplified version here. 凯 and 霞 are common in names. My mom's name has 霞 in it.

Of the four names you listed, I am not crazy about the character 飞, which means "fly" (to be in the air, not the insect), in names.

I think 永珍and 永爱 are not bad. They mean "forever treasured" and "forever loved", respectively. They use common words, have good meanings and are easy to pronounce. And they share the character 永. Sharing one character in siblings' names is very common. And they sound like real names. They are quite good in my opinion.

You might also wish to know that 永珍 is/was the Chinese name of Viangchan, the capital of Lao. The city's name is also translated to 萬象, which seems to be more common than 永珍 these days. But not many people know about this city, or even the country I guess.

There are many online tools that can help you with meanings of characters. Here is one. You could use it next time."
