New Members Calu Posted March 30, 2011 at 10:53 PM New Members Report Share Posted March 30, 2011 at 10:53 PM Hi. I would like to know the meaning of this sign. It is located at the dining room of Base Esperanza, in Antarctica. Nobody there knows what it means. I assume that this is chinese and that is why I posted here. If it's not in chinese, I would like to know in which language it is written (in case anyone knows). Many thanks.
马盖云 Posted March 31, 2011 at 01:34 AM Report Share Posted March 31, 2011 at 01:34 AM It says Chang Bai Shan (Changbai mountain(s)), a volcanic mountain range between Jilin Province and N. Korea. (according to my dictionary). Not sure the significance down there, presumably someone sometime put it there to reming them of home? Are there other signposts with distances down there? Guoke Posted March 31, 2011 at 03:46 AM Report Share Posted March 31, 2011 at 03:46 AM It's definitely Chinese. 长白山,the Changbai Mountains are a mountain range on the border between China and North Korea. It is said that some mysterious creatures live in the lake located in the peak of the Changbai Mountains.
pancake Posted March 31, 2011 at 04:45 AM Report Share Posted March 31, 2011 at 04:45 AM 长白山 has some kind of special meaning for Koreans. It's mentioned in their national anthem, and is also a very popular destination for the Korean students in Harbin.
New Members Calu Posted March 31, 2011 at 01:19 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted March 31, 2011 at 01:19 PM Thank you all for the translation. Now I will have to figure out why is this sign there and what is the distance. It is not the distance between Base Esperanza and Changbai Mountain, as this distance is of 17500 Km (aprox). The distance of the sign is almost the distance between antipodes, but the antipode of the Changbai mountains is in the south atlantic and antipode of Base Esperanza are is in Russia. My guess is that it is the distance you have to travel by sea to get from the Changbai Mountains to Esperanza. Thanks again! Bye
