lansu Posted April 4, 2011 at 04:15 PM Report Posted April 4, 2011 at 04:15 PM Does anyone have definitions in English for 罥 (羂) [juan4] ? Various CE dictionaries give 罥 = "impete," but this is, I think, very close to a non-word, anyway it's not in my Oxford English Dictionary ... Context is a response poem by 裴迪 in the 辋川集 series, first line: 丹刺罥人衣, 芳香留过客. 《椒园》 Usage suggests 罥 may mean "pierce" or "penetrate"... Quote
Raphanid Posted April 5, 2011 at 10:42 PM Report Posted April 5, 2011 at 10:42 PM Wiktionary has "impede". C-C dictionaries on the internet have something like hang down, capture with a rope. I found a similar line in another poem which suggests thorns piercing and pulling back on clothes is the correct meaning here: 棘刺罥衣行路难,枯藤寿柏同樊援。 (from 和景仁喷玉潭 by 司马光) Quote
blackmeow Posted April 6, 2011 at 06:43 AM Report Posted April 6, 2011 at 06:43 AM 罥 is mostly used as a noun, it is not used by nowdays, but used a lot back in Tang( which is about the time between 600ad - 900ad). 罥 means tiny little rope, for exmaple: 罥索--swing。 设罝张罥---罝=net for catch rabbit, 罥=net for catch bird, 设罝张罥:set the nets to catch rabbit and bird. From 罥's original noun from it can also develop into a verb: to stumble or trip someone, when it comes to the verb form it is some as 绊 nowdays. Hope this will do some help. Quote
