Totoro Posted November 29, 2004 at 11:55 PM Report Posted November 29, 2004 at 11:55 PM "In keeping with her reputation as the enfant terrible of Chinese letters, Mian Mian, an ex-drug addict turned dance-party producer, strode into the Commonwealth Club last Friday night wearing black bondage boots and immediately wanted to light up. " "'Why can't you smoke anywhere in this fucking America?' the 33-year-old author of the best-selling novel 'Candy' exclaimed before speeding out the door for a prereading cigarette." "Describing her beloved Shanghai as 'a beautiful bitch who loves money,' Mian is now globe-trotting to promote her book in translation. 'I come to America, I come to France, I come to Portugal, I come to many countries just to have a party, so what do you expect?' the author blurted out at the Commonwealth Club while drinking her wine. " "The day after the reading, I met Mian in the Haight for a San Francisco shopping spree. Dressed in white thigh-high boots and a faux-fur coat, she caught the eye of even the most outrageous slackers, who bummed her French cigarettes while she searched for vintage Doors vinyl. With a microphone hanging out of her own purse, Mian said she was working on her next 'life diary.' So I followed her around the Haight to find out how a Chinese ex-heroin addict writes a novel, and how fame and motherhood have changed things for the Queen of the Shanghai Underworld..." Well, my opinon is that everyone has a right to reserve their opinons when they feel the need to do so. For this particular posting, I just happen to like the girl--this is my only opinon--that's it. If you are not used to the way of reading and interpreting and keeping the meanings to yourself sometimes without ignorantly and arrogantly making stupid remarks, I have no comeback at this, but I just feel sad for you and embarrassed by you. So, in the future, please do a better job at respecting others' rights of freedom of speech, okay? (By the way, it's the first admendment under the Bill of Rights, remember? Hahaha )(You hypocritical Americans!--And sorry, I'm not usually like this, but seeing so many people here like that, I have to treat you as what you are.) Quote
roddy Posted November 29, 2004 at 11:59 PM Report Posted November 29, 2004 at 11:59 PM Number 4, goodbye again. Drop us an email if you actually want to participate . . . Oh, and arrogant? Maybe. American? NEVER Roddy Quote
J.B. Frog Posted November 30, 2004 at 04:46 AM Report Posted November 30, 2004 at 04:46 AM please do a better job at respecting others' rights of freedom of speech, okay? (By the way, it's the first admendment under the Bill of Rights, remember? The freedom of speech rule is for the US government - it can make no law suppressing speech. Private individuals and companies can however do whatever they want. Do you think Americans go into each others homes, start talking offensively and then say 'Freedom of Speech!'? Anyway this is a site where person-to-person discussion is preferred. If you want to share your fan-hood of someone, go make a site for it. Quote

I could use this comment on so many threads. This sort of conspiracy mongering against them Yanks (oh, wait, I'm one of them) is not conducive to anything (especially since Roddy is not one of them). Gary Soup Posted December 6, 2004 at 06:20 AM Report Posted December 6, 2004 at 06:20 AM To Totoro: It's quite obvious to me that the administrator is either a) NOT American or B) a Republican. Your post was about an obviously important cultural phenomenon and you have a (just as obvious) superior understanding of the concept of freedom of speech to that of the admin and his butt-kissers. Not ALL of America is intellectually bankrupt. Rock on! Quote
frozenmyth Posted December 6, 2004 at 06:54 AM Report Posted December 6, 2004 at 06:54 AM Yeah, every once a while you get some not Chinese image fitting Chinese person. Indeed America has Freedom of Speech "thing." I admit that I don't know the whole story with that Chinese woman deal. Just taking a break from my term paper and bored. I can't quite respect the way she expressed herself though. Using derogatory language again a country when one goes to a foreign country. No respect and silly. How will many Chinese feel when an American goes to their turf and goes " F the China." I can be what and do what I like in your F country??? Just doesn't sound appropriate in my opinion. By the way, I have both Chinese and American Understandings quite deeply. Freedom of speech is precious and I feel respect there. I guess freedom with respect may be even more acceptable globally.
