Classic stories for translation?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I want to translate some old stories from English to Chinese. If they are already in the public domain, do I need to obtain any permission to public or distribute the works in their translated form? Do I need to get some kind of right to translate? Would I retain copyright of the translated form? Initially, I'd like to just do this for writing practice, but if I complete anything of quality, I'd like to post it as an eBook perhaps.

You can freely translate works in the public domain. You do not automatically retain copyright of the translated work, unless you specifically choose a copyright license when you distribute it. Of course a lawyer can give more complete advice.
