Hello.

I was wondering, I tried searching these forums for the keyword 2289 but only came up with adverts for learning software.

Is their some significance to this number of chinese characters? I use remembr.it and they use 2289. Is this a magical number or just random?

I was curious why they didnt just do 2000? or 2500?

Sorry if this is a random question.

Alan Hoenig covers 2178 in his work, Chinese Characters. Perhaps a similar work chooses 2289?

So who are "they"? 2289 has no significancy to me and many other Chinese speaker and that is probably why your search didn't yield many results. Your question does sound a bit random to me. Maybe we will be able to help more if more background and context is given.

As the OP wrote, 2289 is the number of characters that the website http://remembr.it (or "eachychinesecharacters") - advertised on this board - claims you can memorize in 90 days.

IMHO they just selected this figure because the 2289 most frequent characters match 98% of the characters found in writing.

The Junda list claims it's only 2285 but maybe the remembr.it people use another list or whatever.

While I don't really understand what you're asking, some numbers have significance to Chinese people as they are near homophones of words that convey something good or auspicious.

For example, you may see some Chinese show preference for phone numbers that contain "8" 发, "9" 久, and "6"乐, while avoiding "4" 死 or "7"(生) 气.

Some of the homophones are closer sounding in Cantonese than Mandarin.

If I were to guess, 2289 might be a homophone for 愉愉发久, roughly translated as "long lasting happiness and wealth".
