roddy Posted December 13, 2011 at 02:53 PM Report Posted December 13, 2011 at 02:53 PM Last minute entry from Tianjin 42: 1) What is your native country? U.K. 2) Where did you apply? By Post to Belgium (EU Scholarship) 3) When did you apply? February 2011 (if memory serves) 4) When was the deadline? March (again, if memory serves) 5) Have you applied for the scholarship before? Yes and no – I applied once before but after failing to secure the scholarship I was told that the electronic part of my application had encountered a problem and though I received notification that it had been received, it was never actually considered. Needless to say, I wasn’t very impressed. 6) What program did you apply for? One Year Language Program 7) What schools did you put for your preferences? 1, Tsinghua, 2, Renmin 3,Tianjin University (天大). 8 ) Did you apply for your school of choice beforehand? No 9) What agency number did you use? EU Code 10) Where did you get your physical done? I didn’t. I emailed The EU Mission in Belgium beforehand and said that I had recently undergone a medical on entering China as a teacher. I requested that I simply include a photocopy of that. They agreed. 11) How did you get your documents notarized? I Sent all the required documents and simply had the British Embassy in Beijing notarize the photocopied degree certificates/ transcripts (which wasn’t cheap but served purpose). 12) Where do you get official Chinese red stamps? / 13) Were you accepted for the scholarship, if you were not then why? I was accepted for the scholarship. 14) How were you notified? The EU results were posted together online. 15) When were you accepted/rejected? I think it was early August. 16) What school and program were you accepted to? Tianjin University, one year language course – as requested. It is worth me pointing out explicitly, I went to Tianjin University which was my third choice. Whilst I was very happy to secure the scholarship I was a little disappointed not to be in Beijing. I originally included Tianjin because I have a few links to the place myself. Given the demand for places in Beijing there might be a lesson in this for the next round of prospective students. Whilst the Chinese course at the lower levels was, in my opinion, poor at Tianjin University, I am now in class D (of classes ranging from A to G) and the professionalism of the teachers seems to increase relative to the ability of the students. Tianjin is only 30 mins away from Beijing on the fast train and so this might be worth a punt as a third option for those keen to be near the capital.
