New Members phonger Posted May 4, 2011 at 05:28 AM New Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2011 at 05:28 AM Hi Everyone, My wife and I are very excited as we are expecting our first baby in the next few months. We are Chinese (Cantonese) and unfortunately not very familiar with our own language. I was hoping someone can offer some insights into appropiate names for our baby. We haven't consulted with our parents yet but we wanted to come up with our own choices before we talk to them to discuss. The gender of our baby is being kept a suprise...but we want to include both an English name and incorporate her Chinese name as her "middle name" so it is official on her/his records. If it is a girl, we are naming her Sophia __________ Fung. If it is a boy we are naming him Logan ___________ Fung. I would like to follow my generational name for the boy. My generational name for my baby is 汝 (which means thou/you). We want a name for the girl that means something poetic; something that incorporates graceful, inspiring, elegant. Something that sounds good in English too. For the boy, we hope to use the 汝 character and add another character that would mean loyalty, determine, clear mind, etc. Any help is appreciated. Sincerely, Devoted Future Father.
jbradfor Posted May 5, 2011 at 02:40 PM Report Share Posted May 5, 2011 at 02:40 PM The name "Sophie" (short for "Sophia") sounds very similar to Cantonese (when pronounced something like "So Fey", not "So Fee"). So if having her Chinese name sound similar to her English name interests you, that at least narrows down the potential characters.
Kiz Posted May 6, 2011 at 02:53 PM Report Share Posted May 6, 2011 at 02:53 PM it is quite a tricky problem~ You know,汝 is an ancient character. There are some literally suitable characters, 忠(zhong) 决(jue) 聪(cong) respectively corresponding to yours. Actually I can't find a character perfectly suit "determine". 决 can be positive and negative, and most of time can't form a Chinese word. 汝聪 is a nice name for Chinese. However 汝忠 汝决 汝聪 do not sound similar to English. You can try 汝飞(fei). 飞 means fly, and is pronounce /fei/. I think it's quite a nice name, although it sort of conflicts the pronunciation of Sophia. Hope you can get a perfect name for your baby~
skylee Posted May 6, 2011 at 05:13 PM Report Share Posted May 6, 2011 at 05:13 PM I suggest 馮孟汝 (Mengru). 孟 (meng4) simply means first-born. I think it is clear and simple, and is suitable for both genders. Or you can soften it a bit by using 如 (ru2) instead of 汝 if it is a girl. Alternatively, as Sophia means wisdom, you could consider 睿明 (rui4 ming2 / Ruiming) or 睿敏 (rui4 min3 / Ruimin). As to "loyal, determined, clear-minded, etc", you could also consider 汝耿 (ru3 geng3 / Rugeng). Its pronunciation is also similar to Logan. You can paste the Chinese words here to get the meanings. PS - the above are in Mandarin romanisation. I note that the surname is "Fung". If you need help in Cantonese romanisation, just ask.
New Members phonger Posted May 6, 2011 at 09:50 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted May 6, 2011 at 09:50 PM Thank you for your response. Suprisingly, I actually have thought of those names. I have been using the link http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php to help with definitino and prounciation in Cantonese. I actually wanted to find a good sounding Chinese name that would also sound good in English. If it is a girl, Sophia is a very soft-gentle name. I wanted to give her the option of using a more "tom-boy" name, if she choses to. So I was thinking of finding Cantonese transliteration to the names of KayLie, KarLi, KayLyn, KayLan. I think those names would be appropiate as boyish names and double as her Cantonese name if I can match the characters right. If it is a boy, I would like to use 汝 BLANK for the name. I have consider 馮汝成 (yuesing) 馮汝荣 (yuewing)...I wanted something poetic for both their names. Deeper meaning. And yes, if the romanization is Cantonese also. You guys are the best. Thanks. New Members chansan Posted May 25, 2011 at 09:24 PM New Members Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 at 09:24 PM My suggestion: use Yuewing for boy. It seems that you are looking for something unique, KayLyn is very very popular in the US.
New Members phonger Posted May 26, 2011 at 10:29 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted May 26, 2011 at 10:29 PM Hi everyone, sorry about the absence. My wife gave birth to a baby girl a few days ago! The suprise is over and we need a name for a baby girl! I was thinking Sophia Kaili (--> Kaylee) Fung. The characters I was thinking of using would be 祺 莉 which translate to good luck/good fortune and white jasmine -- so basically lucky flower! I was just curious to know if there were any problems with the character chosen, especially if it sounded alright in Cantonese. So her Chinese name would be 馮 祺 莉. My concern is that the name wouldn't sound appropiate in Cantonese or that she will be ridicule if it sounded weird. Your opinion and suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance. Happy father.
