Abbreviations of Chinese provnices

Can anyone enlighten me on the origin and meaning for the abbreviations of the Chinese provinces? I have them listed below and some are obvious. What about the others? Are they ethnic groups, ancient kingdoms? Abbreviations are in parentheses

Obvious (or maybe they also need explanation)

北京市 (京) Beijing

天津市 (津) Tianjin

辽宁 (辽) Liaoning

内蒙古 (内蒙古) Inner Mongolia

吉林 (吉) Jilin

黑龙江 (黑) Heilongjiang

江苏 (苏) Jiangsu

浙江 (浙) Zhejiang

四川 (川) Sichuan

西藏 (藏) Xizang (Tibet)

青海 (青) Qinghai

宁夏 (宁) Ningxia

新疆 (新) Xinjiang

河北 (冀) Hebei

Thanks, but some some reason when I visit the page I just see a bunch of ASCII text garbage. This is strange because all other Chinese websites work fine.

我国省级行政单位简称的来历

我国省级行政单位的简称为使用方便、容易记忆,多采用全名中的一个字或几个字。如京(北京市)、津(天津市)、黑(黑龙江省)、吉(吉林省)、辽(辽宁省)、内蒙古(内蒙古自治区)、苏(江苏省)、浙(浙江省)、川(四川省)、贵(贵州省)、云(云南省)、藏(西藏自治区)、陕(陕西省)、甘(甘肃省)、青(青海省)、宁(宁夏回族自治区)、新(新疆维吾尔自治区)、台(台湾省)等。

也有相当一部分的简称采用了历史的古地名。如河北省古为冀州之地,简称“冀”。山西省春秋时为晋国地,简称“晋”。相传上海境内吴淞江(苏州河)下游近海一段古称沪渎,所以简称“沪”;又上海西部地区为战国时代楚国春申君黄歇的封地,亦简称“申”。山东省春秋时代为鲁国地,简称“鲁”。河南省古为豫州之地,简称“豫”。湖北省因清代省会武昌是隋以后鄂州的治所,故简称“鄂”。广东省古为百越(粤)地,简称“粤”。广西壮族自治区秦为桂林郡,简称“桂”。重庆市因隋、唐曾置渝州于此,简称“渝”。福建省因秦设闽中郡,简称“闽”;也有说因境内有闽江或古为闽越族居地而得名。海南省因明初设琼州府,辖境包括整个海南岛,故名“琼”。

另外,有些以全名首字为简称的,同时也以古地名为简称。如贵州省秦属黔中郡、唐属黔中道,故简称“黔”。四川省因春秋战国时为蜀国地,故简称“蜀”。云南省省会昆明附近一带古代曾是滇国之地,所以简称“滇”。陕西省春秋战国时为秦国地,故简称“秦”。甘肃省古为陇西地,简称“陇”。

也有一些省级行政单位用本省主要山、河、湖的名称作简称。如安徽省因有天柱山(皖山),而简称“皖”。江西省因赣江流贯全境,简称“赣”。湖南省因有湘江贯流南北,简称“湘”。

Bejing's most famous brew: 燕京

Nanjing's best: 金陵

There were more, but I forget, anybody else know of any?
