New Members focus633 Posted May 9, 2011 at 04:21 PM New Members Report Posted May 9, 2011 at 04:21 PM Hola everyone: During July and August i am going to Beijing University to learn Chinese, it is very intensive, they say after two months if i pass all the exams i will get a certificate from Beijing University and Chinese Culture Institute. Do you think this will help when i finish University and look for a job? or may help when i apply for a student exchange program with Chinese University? Peace Ana Quote

I'm sure it can't hurt. At the very least it's something that might make you stand out from other similarly qualified candidates. Quote
xiaoxiaocao Posted May 10, 2011 at 04:33 AM Report Posted May 10, 2011 at 04:33 AM You could also think about taking the HSK exam if it coincides with your time in China. There is a test on September 4th, if you can extend your stay until then and take it right after you finish your language program it would be perfect. After two months of study level 1 should be a breeze and level 2 definitely doable. Quote
New Members focus633 Posted May 10, 2011 at 08:05 AM Author New Members Report Posted May 10, 2011 at 08:05 AM Thats awesome! On the program page (www.chinesecultureinstitute.com/chinese-programs/beijing-university-summer-course/) they say i could reach 300 words and be able to get around or have a simple conversition. In my opinion that sounds pretty fast, so with 300 words and basic speaking skill, would i be able to pass HSK 1? I think for this program Beijing University will send us a 3 months studying visa, then attending HSK on Septemper 4th should be no problem. Thanks for the information! get a certificate from Beijing Uni, and attending HSK level test, would help in the future without doubt. I am already proud of will be able to speak Chinese Quote
Erbse Posted May 10, 2011 at 12:19 PM Report Posted May 10, 2011 at 12:19 PM I just took a look at their webpage. They have some bold claims there and a steep price for a summer course. I'm waiting for your report that you will write when you are back >> Do you think this will help when i finish University and look for a job? or may help when i apply for a student exchange program with Chinese University? You should continue to learn after you return. If you don't follow up your intensive course with a lot of repetition you might forget a lot soon afterwards. A certificate is nice, but your future employer might ask you to show him the skills. Personally I don't think certificates are that important. Important is what you can do. Quote
Lu Posted May 10, 2011 at 12:53 PM Report Posted May 10, 2011 at 12:53 PM I think HSK 1 can be passed after a few months of diligent study. Perhaps even HSK 2. Spending 2 months in China learning Chinese will look good on a resume as it says something about your character (willing to go to faraway place to learn difficult language), that should certainly help a little. If that's all the Chinese you learn, your Chinese won't be of a level that you can seriously use it in a job though, so if you want to really speak Chinese you will need to continue studying after your time here. 1 Quote
xiaoxiaocao Posted May 11, 2011 at 05:31 AM Report Posted May 11, 2011 at 05:31 AM Aim for Level 2 HSK. After two months of intensive study you should be able to make a good crack at it. This is provided you put in a good amount of effort outside of class of course, and don't get caught up in the Beijing party scene spending all your time with other foreigners  You don't need to ace the test as 60% is the passing grade. Good Luck!! Quote
