Don_Horhe Posted May 26, 2011 at 04:08 PM Report Share Posted May 26, 2011 at 04:08 PM I'm translating a report from Chinese to Bulgarian, which is to be read at a conference in about 2 weeks, and have come across a sentence that I cannot understand. 不过,如果我们能从当时的实际情况出发,以较长的一段历史时期作考证,不难得出这样的结论:这个名称可能毫无意义。 What bothers me in particular is the part in bold and, more precisely, the meaning of 以. My version is with 以 meaning 用, rendering the phrase "if we base our research on a longer historical period/wider historical time frame". PS The author of the original Chinese text is not a native speaker.
Daan Posted May 26, 2011 at 05:44 PM Report Share Posted May 26, 2011 at 05:44 PM That's how I'd read that sentence too.

Don, you got it right. 以 in this context means by, through, or using. The Chinese of the original is quite good..
