I'm reading a book on music fundamentals in Chinese. I came across this sentence:

如高、低音谱表用弧线(直括弧、花括弧)连结在一起即构成“大谱表”。

For instance, the treble and bass staffs can be combined using a bracket or a brace to form a "grand staff".

直括弧 and 花括弧 refer to brackets [] and braces {}. In piano music, it's the vertical line at the beginning of a staff that joins the left hand and right hand music together.

My question is this: Are 直括弧 and 花括弧 the words for [] and {}, the punctuation? Or do they have other names?

From my (albeit limited) experience, all punctuation is called some kind of 号; brackets are 括号. I believe this also applies to the musical braces and brackets: I only consciously remember having seen and heard 号. The use of 弧 sounds possible, though it sounds slightly 'art-sy' to me, so when referring to the punctuation mark, the 号 form definitely sounds more appropriate. Though Chinese Wikipedia gives 括孤号 as a possibility for bracket.

Hope that might be of some use.

Here in HK both 括號 and 括弧 are used. What I learnt from math lessons is that ( ) is (小)括號/弧, [ ] is 中括號/弧, { } is 大括號/弧. I am not sure if these terms are still in use, or if they are applicable to musical symbols.

What else could it refer to? It only makes sense that 直括弧 are [ and 花括弧 are {.

(BTW, I've never seen them go the other way.)

Edit: Nevermind. I misunderstood your question.
