As Meng Lelan said the environment is a must, but if there’s no Chinese environment, you can talk with Chinese friends on-line to improve spoken Chinese. Rezaf is intermediate, course can be substituted by learning by himself 2hrs each day, that should be based on you can self-control well. Self-learning mainly focus on expanding vocabulary and grammar.

One of my American friends is learning Chinese, he talk with a Shanghai colleague and me by microphone on MSN once a week, and take some course hold by his company. He just come to China once for business necessary, but he never give up because of he is very interested at Chinese culture. Now his spoken Chinese is getting better, quicker than before.
