Silent Posted June 4, 2011 at 07:52 PM Report Share Posted June 4, 2011 at 07:52 PM How would you translate: 所以汉字的‘安’字就是‘宀’下边加一个‘女’字。?
skylee Posted June 5, 2011 at 10:54 AM Report Share Posted June 5, 2011 at 10:54 AM Consider: So the Chinese character ‘安’is formed by placing the character ‘女’under the radical ‘宀’.
fanglu Posted June 5, 2011 at 11:58 AM Report Share Posted June 5, 2011 at 11:58 AM Depends on the context. For example, for an audience unfamiliar with characters: So the character for 'peace' or 'safety' is the character for 'woman' under the radical for 'roof'.
Silent Posted June 5, 2011 at 03:14 PM Author Report Share Posted June 5, 2011 at 03:14 PM Thanks for the replies. Your replies are pretty much what I initially had made of it. I however had the feeling that this did not justice to the context, so I wanted confirmation... The context is a reading excercise (joke) for beginners in Mandarin. It's the answer to the question: 屋子里有个女人,会怎么样? I pondered a little more about it myself too. I decided on "If you have a woman in the house (a roof over a woman) you get security"
