HedgePig Posted June 6, 2011 at 06:27 AM Report Posted June 6, 2011 at 06:27 AM A month or two ago, I stumbled across a website which I have found extremely useful for practicing Chinese reading. I did mention it once in another thread but I think it deserves it’s own. The site is called Chinese Stories Platform and is found at http://www.chinesest...m.com/index.php For some reasone reason it doesn't show up in google when doing searches for "Chinese readng practice" or similar, so I suspect people who might be interested may not actually be aware of it. The website has various articles aimed at the (old) HSK Lower-Intermediate and Intermediate levels. I’ve gone through a dozen or so articles at the Lower-Intermediate level. They are posted in simplified and traditional Chinese along with a pinyin transcript as well as a vocabulary list (graded by old HSK word list level) and a recording of the article. The stories are often little slice-of-life pieces, such as the retired man who got so fed up with the state of roads around his hometown that he goes out and repairs themselves or the teacher turned farmer who loves to write poems. One whole article is typically split up into 2 or 3 separate posts, although there are shorter and longer ones as well. A 3 post article might be around 1200 characters, which is a bit longer than what I've come across elsewhere - and great for "getting into" what you areading. The site has been going for about 2 years and posting appear to be very regular, so there is a large body of articles to go through. Overall, I really recommend Chinese Stories Platform for someone who is wanting to practise reading and who is past the complete beginner stage. 4 Quote

stoney Posted June 9, 2011 at 01:22 AM Report Posted June 9, 2011 at 01:22 AM Have you listened to the mp3s? Is that a computer generated voice? Quote
HedgePig Posted June 9, 2011 at 02:46 AM Author Report Posted June 9, 2011 at 02:46 AM I don't think the mp3's are computer generated but I must admit they sometimes sound a little awkward. I read somewhere on the website that they were trying to read at the same pace as the HSK exam and I think that in reading them more slowly they phrasing is not always quite as natural. Quote
New Members dhang Posted June 12, 2011 at 03:14 AM New Members Report Posted June 12, 2011 at 03:14 AM I agree, this site is pretty useful. Its good for finding reading material that is specific to my reading level. I wish there was a way to export vocabulary list Quote
Geiko Posted January 29, 2012 at 08:45 PM Report Posted January 29, 2012 at 08:45 PM Isn't this webpage working any more? Quote
HedgePig Posted January 30, 2012 at 01:32 AM Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 at 01:32 AM Geiko - it seemed to be down for a while but is back up again. However, no more new content is being added - or at least it's not appearing in the history. I believe this site is ggoing to be discontinued replaced with a paid-content site. A great pity although I can't really blame the authors as this seemed to be a lot of work without any revenue. I don't know whether the exisiting stuff will taken down. Quote
